"She can handle the ball and we'll work with her this summer." The move to the off-guard spot doesn't faze Pope.

She's well prepared for the transition, having played guard in AAU and at the Empire State Games. camps I played it because I knew that's where I would be playing in college," Pope said. McManus said there's no pres sure on Pope since the Lady Spartans return two talented guards in senior Sheila Goulding and sophomore Denise Prisco. "It's not a do-or-die situation where she has to come in and produce," McManus said. McManus said two other players have also been signed.

By John Humenn Staff Writer Debbie Pope, who led Irvington High to the Class state and Federation girls' basketball championships this season, has signed a letter of intent to attend St. Thomas Aquinas College. Pope, a 5-foot-8 center who averaged 15 points per game for the Bulldogs, is considered one of the top Class players in the state. She was named to the Class All-State team as a junior when she led Irvington to the state final. This year's All-State team will be announced this Sunday and Pope is considered a cinch to be on it.

Team records Nanuet 4-1, Pelham 3-1, Kathy Gardner photo Clarkstown North's Rich Wir-chansky delivers pitch. NORTH From page D1 Rams had four runners thrown out at the plate on base hits. Granted it was in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings when they were ahead, but they kept coming. They even collected four bunt base hits. "He was ahead early.

You've got to run," said North Rockland coach John DiGirolamo. This being the first league puncture of the Raider armor in a while, DiGirolamo knows what it can mean to the psyches of other teams against North Rockland. They'll all point to this. "Obviously everyone is out to beat us, and I've kept telling the kids that for two years now," he said. The North strategy was part of a simple pre-game plan: If the opportunity exists, seize it.

"I talked to the team before the game, and we discussed that one of the reasons that we hadn't been so successful in the past is that when we got chances, there was no one who would rise to the occasions," said Brutrager. It was a matter of realizing, "this is where we want to be, and then doing something about it," Bruntrager said. "And we responded real well." And while the Rams equally treated North Rockland pitchers, scoring five runs each off starter Darren Luzon (4 IP) and Matt Leach, Wirchansky dulled the Raider bats. After yielding back-to-back triples to Joey Hughes and Joe Algozzino, creating a brief 2-1 Raider lead, Wirchansky gave up only three hits and a walk the rest of the way. Wirchansky only struck out two, but kept shortstop Kieran Dwyer and second baseman Lemonis busy by getting groundball after ground- ball out.

He retired the side in the fifth, all on grounders to short, and did the same in the sixth on ground ers to second. Two more were hit to short in the seventh. "This was his best performance of the year," said Bruntrager. "To date this year, he hadn been pitch ing as well as he did a year ago, and he hasn't been happy with that, and that includes scrimmages and everything. Scary thought, now that he's 4-0.

But here's the real thought: How much emphasis do we put on Rams 10, Raiders 2, second league game of the season? "By the end of the season, North Rockland will be right there," said Bruntrager, who also discussed perspective with the Rams, like, "not to jump up and down like it was the seventh game of the World Series if we won. DiGirolamo also chose to shrug off any implied importance at this stage. "We just have to put it aside and come back again (today) against Clarkstown South, he said. "No excuses, we were outplayed and outcoached, but I think we'll come back. So when can we add true signifi cance to a league game like this? DiGirolamo smiled.

"I would wait till at least next week." Clarkstown N. (6-0, 2-0) 130 021 3 10 14 1 N. Rockland (3-4, 1-1) 200 000 0 2 5 3 RBI CN: Lemonis 4, Forsberg, Sayegh, Gunning, Arohackl; NR: Hughes, Algozzino. IB NR: Hughes. Algozzino.
