"It bobbled in my glove and I never got a handle on it," Leary said. "I couldn't believe I didn't make the play." Leary compounded matters by walking Ruben Sierra, then serving up a 3-1 fastball that Harold Baines clobbered, sending it into the center field bleachers to the right of the 400 foot sign for the first of three Texas home runs. The mishandled bunt tainted an otherwise strong 129-pitch effort by Leary, who permitted just three hits and four runs, one earned, in 6 23 innings. Leary exited after a two-out single by Pettis in favor of Lee Guetterman. The left-hander appeared to have the final out of the inning when Palmeiro flied to center.

Center fielder Roberto Kelly gradually retreated, then broke into a run when Palmeiro's drive carried further than anyone could have imagined. The ball landed over Kelly's head for an RBI triple. Julio Franco followed with an infield single off Jeff Robinson that made it 5-2 Texas. If the Yankees are to avoid a repeat of last year's 74-87 debacle, Leary will have to handle the bunt and Kelly will have to better judge Palmeiro's drive. And perhaps manager Bucky Dent and everyone else will have to find some answers during a 10-game homestand that begins METSArom page D1 YOUTH BASEBALL NANUET LL Hrelee Breves 2: Chris Camplnella's three-run double end Brendan Walsh's three hits proved to be the difference for the winners.

Braves 9, Tigers 7: Weston Weils end Sam Lewdwed Male able-bodied winner Andy Kohlbrenner is riding the crest of a hot streak that has certified him as lord of the local distance-running circuit. The 26-year-old from New City let it fly on the downhill fourth mile to open an insurmountable gap on runner-up Mike Bunsey. Kohlbrenner cruised in unpressed in Bunsey was about 300 yards in arrears in 32:06.

"I planned to make some kind of surge at halfway, and this course is very conducive to that because between three and four miles it's downhill and shady," said Kohlbrenner, who has another major test on Thursday the high-powered Penn Relays track race. "The last two miles I coud've dug deeper if I had to, but I backed off to save something for Penn." "I let down once he broke away," said Bunsey, a 26-year-old from Ithaca, N.Y., who ran the first 15 miles of the Boston Marathon last Monday before dropping out with blisters. Jeanne Pare didn't approach the women's able-bodied record of 35:37 she set while winning in 1986, but the 29-year-old from Gainesville, nonetheless held sway to become a two-time winner. She clocked 36:08.9 to finish 11th among all able-bodied runners. When she won in '86, the transplanted Brooklynite was about to begin her medical internship at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

So she gave her winning prize, the European airline tickets, to her sister Alice, who took a trip to Ireland. Now Pare, a 34:13 10K runner and 2:44 marathoner, is a licensed rheumatologist at the University of Florida, and this time she plans to travel to the Emerald Isle and visit her 82-year-old grandmother. "My sister won't be so lucky this time," she said with a wry smile. Dwight Gooden and Fernandez got knocked around in their first two starts; both talked about being out of sync, not having any rhythm; both pitched the way their bio says they should the third time. On the mechanical side, Fernandez did start pushing off more with his back leg. "Usually when Sid is having trouble, he's erratic up and down," said pitching coach Mel Stottle-myre. "Last game his pitches were running away from righthanded hitters. "He's almost a two-phase pitcher.

First his legs and lower body, then his arm. Since he wasn't driving with his legs, he was mostly all arm." The pitcher agreed, but in a lot fewer words. "I was out of sync," he said. "That kind of bothered me." Words weren't necessary. Tim Raines got to third in the first inning, to second in the seventh.

Nothing unusual about the situations. A walk, stolen base and catcher's throwing error; a walk and stolen base. "I had Raines twice," Mets catcher Mackey Sasser joked. "First time I was a little high about 12 feet. Second one I was a little low oh, about 12 feet." It's easy to joke about these things when you're winning.

There was one oddity. Sasser also through out a runner, when Mike Fitzgerald tried a delayed steal in the second. That's happened twice in 31 tries. Back to Fernandez: Other than singles by Raines in the fourth and seventh, and the two walks, the innnings were all 1-2-3. combined on the mound to help get the wm.

She dominated her sport in high school and was a class president for four years at Pearl River, the class valedictorian and a Phi Beta Kappa at Stanford University.

There have been many great scholar-athletes through the years in Rockland, but I always considered McGuire the greatest of them all, combining academics, community service and athletics. Nothing that has happened since her graduation from Pearl River in 1979 has changed my mind. Steve Drummond's column appears every Monday. APRIL 27 play of the day was a pitchout to Clancy running to his left. Time after time, he tried to run over the Clarkstown safety (me) when a simple fake and speedy burst to the sideline would have easily put him in the clear for a touchdown.

Every time I tackled him, I came down elbow-first on the then rock-hard Nyack field. Hey, fellows, let's play on the parking lot and get some relief. The next day my elbow was three times its normal size and Nyack was still celebrating its win via a Clancy touchdown. By the by, no one that ever saw Don Clancy's acceleration coming out of a turn in track will ever forget it. I never did.

Come Celebrate Our 40th Anniversay of Harness Racing WE'RE ROLLING BACK THE PRICES! 500 HOT DOGS I a we were 9-2 I'd say the same thing." If they were 9-2 after 13 games, we would all be worried. "The key for us is always going to be pitching," Mcllvaine continued. "When we pitch well, we play well." Pitching doesn't get much better than the two-hit, four-strikeout effort Sid Fernandez put together.

It was the fifth two-hitter of his career, the big difference being in the others he had nine, nine, 12 and 13 strikeouts. Does that make it more or less impressive? "Neither," Fernandez said. "I'll take a win over strikeouts any day." If you want to put Mcllvaine's previous comment into some kind of overall context, Fernandez serves well. Just the other night he walked the bases loaded and gave up a grand slam to the Cubs' Lloyd Mc-Clendon. When they don't pitch well, they don't play well.

Losses don't get much worse than that 8-6 embarrassment. This is the part where you ask how Fernandez can be so bad one time, and so good the next. "He's in a situation like Doc where he needs more time in spring training to get ready," Johnson said. "Power pitchers are like that." At least the manager didn't say Fernandez had been tipping his pitches. Call it an excuse if you want, but maybe the 32-day lockout and shortened spring is partly to blame.

A comparison is in order. Both At times, it was with great economy only seven pitches in the fourth inning, four in the fifth. Surely there's something that needs to be said. "I couldn't tell much," Fernandez said. "All the pitches looked straight as an arrow to me." Good enough.

If you can believe this, there was also a little luck involved in the win. Third inning, Gregg Jefferies on first, Keith Miller up. "We were trying to hit-and-run," the manager said. Right, Miller hits his first home run and all he's trying to do is make contact. "True," Miller said.

"Sometimes when you hit down on the ball, if you get under it just a little, it jumps." Come on "I'm serious. I've never hit a home run like that before, but I have hit balls hard." Speaking of hard-hit balls, there was a tracer Darryl Strawberry smoked to center in the fifth. The new, complete Darryl hustled it into a triple, and he scored on Kevin McReynolds' hit past shortstop. The other two runs came on a bases-loaded, pinch-hit single by Tim Teufel in the seventh. Check that again A pinch-hit single, two RBI.

Pitch well play well Things seem to be falling into place. Finally! "We're not at .500 yet," the manager said. "I won't be happy until we get there. "This is only two (in a row). I'd like to see a couple more." Oh, you mean a streak.
