It was the first loss for coach Paul (Bear) Bryant's Crimson Tide since the first game of the THE SOUTH 1965 season, when Georgia beat Alabama, 18-17. The victory was the first for the Vols over Alabama since 1960. The 1965 game ended in a 7-7 tie.

With regular quarterbacks Dewey Warren and Charlie Fulton out with injuries, sophomore Wyche started for the Vols and marched them 67 yards with the opening kickoff, sending Walter Chadwick over for the touchdown on the 13th play of the series. Touchdown Play The Tide roared back with the ensuing kickoff. Quarterback Kenny Stabler swept around end on an eight-yard touchdown play to cap a 51-yard drive. The Vols took a 17-7 lead in the third period on an 1-yard scoring pass from Chadwick to Ken DeLong and a 47-yard field goal by Karl Kremser, who also kicked two extra points. Alabama began playing desperation ball and Tennessee's secondary picked off five Stabler passes.

Wyche hit eight of 14 pass attempts for 79 yards. His favorite target was fleet Richmond Flowers, who hauled in six for 57 yards. Despite the five interceptions, Stabler picked up 154 yards by passing but gained only 88 on the ground. It was little consolation, but A 1 a a a' potent Stabler-to-Dennis Homan passing duo broke a school record. Homan caught seven passes, bringing his season total to a record 33 with five games to go.
