"It's not OK for your peers, for adults or for anyone to make you feel like you're doing something wrong by being yourself," Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado says in the video. The video's release comes less than a week after New York State legislators voted to allow same-sex marriages. Delaware's civil unions bill was signed into law in March, giving same-sex couples legal protections and benefits. Other senators featured in the video include Richard Blumen-thal of Connecticut, Maria Cantwell of Washington, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Dianne Fein-stein of California, Al Franken of Minnesota, Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer of New York, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, and Ron Wyden of Oregon.

The senators are among 25 co-sponsors of the "Respect for Marriage Act," which would provide equal rights for same-sex couples and their families under federal law. Federal law restricts marriage benefits to opposite-sex couples. The senators say the political atmosphere for change is getting better, citing the repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" law. "Equality is what America is about," Coons says. "Liberty and justice for all means for all." Contact Nicole Gaudiano at ngaudianogannett.com.
