Those restarts, which NASCAR implemented at Pocono Raceway in June, will put the leader and the second-place driver side-by-side as they take the green flag after cautions. It goes that way throughout the rest of the field, which has made the racing much more intense on restarts. "That brings a lot of excitement into the races," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Gretzky quits as Coyotes coach; Tippet hired GLENDALE, Ariz. -Wayne Gretzky's tenure as coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, a period marked largely by on-ice futility, ended abruptly Thursday when the "Great One" announced he would be stepping down amid the financial turmoil surrounding the team. The Coyotes hired former Dallas Stars coach Dave Tip-pett hours after Gretzky announced his departure, which had been rumored as the bankruptcy court battle tween Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie and the NHL over the sale of the team continued.

Gretzky, who was due to make $8.5 million this season, coached the Coyotes from 2005-2009, finishing with a 143-161-24 record. The team missed the playoffs in all four seasons. Gretzky, 48, also owns a small piece of the franchise. Canadiens defenseman Brisebois retires MONTREAL Montreal Canadiens defenseman Patrice Brisebois retired Thursday, ending his 18-year NHL career. An emotional Brisebois marked the occasion by wearing the Stanley Cup ring he won with the Canadiens in 1993.

So I think it's good for everybody." The leader gets to choose which lane to use in the restart. Drivers differ on which lane is "I'd probably choose the outside at Dover because you can get such a run around the top side of turns one and two that you can clear the guy down the back even if that guy got a good restart," Kyle Busch said. "Typically, you know whoever takes off first can almost beat the guy to the next corner, so whichever row the leader picks, you hope you're in that row because it seems to move along at least one car better than the opposite row." Marcos Ambrose says the fastest way around the Monster Mile is on the bottom. "You want to be on the bottom and get that track position and get going," Ambrose said. "I think Dover itself really runs on the bottom.

NASCAR: Unflappable Johnson finds himself in fast company FROM PACE CI Johnson has already joined Cale Yarborough as the only Cup drivers to have captured three straight championships. If Johnson can win this season's title, he will stand alone in NASCAR's history "Johnson never seems to get rattled. His cage is never rattled," Brian Vickers said. "Rarely does he make mistakes.

No matter how bad things get, they always seem to be there at the end of the race." It has already been a memorable year for Johnson. He has recorded three wins and is coming off a fourth-place finish at New Hampshire last Sunday. Heck, President Barack Obama even poked a little fun at Johnson during a ceremony at the White House on Aug. 19 honoring the NASCAR champion. "Like me, I think Johnson's greatest achievement is probably just how far he married up," Obama said, of Johnson's wife, Chandra, drawing chuckles from the crowd.

This Sunday will be no laughing matter for Johnson. He is tied with Jeff Gordon and Martin for most all-time victories at Dover by an active driver with four. Johnson believes Sunday's AAA 400 will have a different look than the spring race. He thinks a different tire compound that Goodyear is bringing to Dover will produce a more competitive event. "The tire that they brought lays down rubber much faster and you'll see the track blacken up in a hurry," Johnson said.

"The tire that's coming back from the technology from the Indy tire test has been put into this tire and it lays rubber fast. "The more rubber that goes down, there's a lot of oil in the tire, it's black so as the sunlight sits on it, it's going to get slick and slimy and stuff. During the course of the race, I am anticipating there being less grip." That should help to put more of the outcome into the most talented drivers' hands, those who can control aJ loose race car through Dover's long corners. "We're just trying to stop him," Carl Edwards said of Johnson. "What he did last season was unreal.

I think his average finish over the last couple seasons In the Chase is fifth. That's pretty spectacular. "I think oftentimes it appears that his accomplishments get overlooked or overshadowed by something. But I think we're going to look back and point to Jimmie Johnson and say no matter what the season he's had a spectacular roll." It's a roll that might not be over just yet.
