Buriai will tol-low in All Saints Cemetery. Arrangements by JOHN F. YASIK FUNERAL HOME Hugh R. "Rod" Beaton Jr. (September 28, 1951 June 22, 2011) By Christopher Beaton, with Sally Beaton Hugh R.

"Rod" Beaton of Herndon, Virginia, died June 22, 2011, after a valiant and courageous battle against Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Rod was born in Augusta, Georgia, to the late Hugh R. Beaton Sr. and the late Elaine Beaton, most recently of Hockessin, Delaware. He is survived by wife, Maria, sons Kyle and Cody, and brother, Christopher Beaton (and wife, Sally) of Boca Raton, Florida.

Rod's sterling academic career included graduation from Greenville, Delaware's A.I. DuPont High School and the University of Delaware. He demonstrated outstanding leadership, ambition, and writing talent even at a young age; his high school yearbook photo's caption included the prophetic and prescient prediction of "destined for greatness." Following college graduation, Rod parlayed his lifelong interest in professional sports, especially ice hockey, into a sports reporting position with his hometown newspaper, the Wilmington, Delaware News-Journal in 1978. Rod paid his dues covering everything from dog shows to movies to high school sports, as well as baseball's Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies, and the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League. He impressed everyone quickly with his hockey acumen, integrity, professionalism, and work ethic.

Four years later, Rod was selected to be a founding member of, and the hockey writer for, USA Today. Rod quickly became one of the most highly respected members of the NHL "beat" writers, and even became the President of the Hockey Writers Association of America in the mid-1980s. Rod continued his amazing career for USA Today when he switched to baseball in 1986, until 2007. He also covered Super Bowls, the Winter Olympics, college hockey, and the Dayto-na 500. He frequently men-tored younger and aspiring journalists, and set the bar high with his professionalism, journalism ethics, integrity, enthusiasm, and training on how to "dig" for a story.

A talented chef, he could have been a great restaurant reviewer as well. At home. Rod also achieved tremendous success, both as a devoted husband for 27 years to Maria, and proud and dedicated father to Kyle and Cody. Rod refused to allow the stresses of deadlines and frequent travel to in any way diminish his love for and dedication to his family, as well as offering guidance to his sons. He was also happy to use his hard-earned frequent flyer and hotel award points, for trips and vacations, with them.

More than anything, Rod was known for his character and integrity, compassion for animals, basic decency, sophisticated humor, enthusiasm, sunny personality, quick smile, and especially, his kindness towards relatives, friends. colleagues, ballplayers, and perfect strangers. Whether it was discussing teams or players, his latest restaurant "find," vacation ideas, the merits of political candidates or issues, or his love for his family, Rod will be missed by all of the thousands of lives he touched and enriched, as well as his millions of readers in "America's newspaper!"
