While many of the other Chase drivers were swallowed up in a cloud of smoke and crunching sheet metal, Johnson kept his Chevrolet pointed straight at what will probably be his unprecedented fourth consecutive Cup championship. "All it's going to do is shorten your fuse, potentially put the team on edge to where you make bad decisions and we don't need that." Johnson and his team are still learning. That's not his style. "I'm not going to let up and lose focus to the job I need to do and allow the championship to be in the forefront of my mind until it's mathematically locked out," Johnson said. "1 can lose 165 points on Sunday if I miss a shift and blow the engine at the start of the Texas race and Mark has a perfect day.

"I just can't stop doing what I do. How the team does their thing, how we prepare, and let that in until there is no chance-because lacing doesn't have any feelings. Racing will reach up and bite you at any point and anything can happen." This scenario is looking awfully familiar to Martin, who finished second in the points standings in 1990, '94, '98 and 2002. Martin said there is one good thing that might come out of Talladega: Maybe now people will stop asking him about the points. "I'm not tired of the racing at all.

I am tired of the points, and I'm not just saying that because of being behind," Martin said. "We were chasing points to get into the Chase, and now that we're here, that's all people are talking about. "I'm just ready to have a fresh outlook and get back to it just being about the race itself. I'll be looking forward to Day-tona next February and starting with a clean slate there." Most of the other drivers had to pit for gas later during the final caution period, which allowed Johnson to restart ahead of them.

Johnson now needs to score 402 points over the final three races, no matter what Martin does, to capture the crown. Even if Martin wins all three races, an average lOth-place finish (134 points) over the final three events is all Johnson needs to claim the championship. The world's largest automaker announced Wednesday it needs to cut costs and focus on its core business.

"Based on the current economic environment, we realize we have no choice but to withdraw from Formula One," Toyota president Akio Toyoda said at a news conference. "This has boon a very painful decision for the company." Toyota follows Honda Motor Co. as the second big Japanese automaker to withdraw from the sport in the last 11 months. Honda pulled out last December amid worsening economic conditions. Brawn CP, which took over the old Honda team, won the 2009 Fl championship.

Toyota officials called the withdrawal from Fl complete, making a return to the sport when and if conditions improve unlikely. Toyota is seeking to cut costs as it expects to post an operating loss for the six months ending on Sept. 30. It is due to report earnings today. The company posted its worst-ever loss in the financial year at the end of March.

Formula One's governing body will review the legality Toyota's pullout from the sport. FIA says that since the Japanese team's announcement comes only weeks after it committed to the sport through 2012. It will seek "urgent clarification" as to the team's "legal position" in the Fl championship. Like other Japanese exporters, Toyota has been hurt by a strong yen. The dollar has recently hovered around 90 yen.

Toyoda, giaiiilsuii of the company's founder who became president this year, has vowed to avoid a third straight year of losses. On Monday, Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone Corp. announced it would not renew its exclusive deal to supply tires for Fl when its contract expires in 2010.
