which killed dozens of people. The two sides met Dec. 10, 1974, in Feakle, in the Republic of Ireland, and had a cordial encounter. Arthur Butler, an Anglican bishop, recalled that the churchmen "were all most impressed with their attitude, with their fair-mindedness, and we were so pleased to find that they were talking seriously and deeply." The meeting broke up early when the IRA men were warned that police were on the way, and it wasn't until 1992 that Weir was involved in another meeting with the IRA. Elected moderator of the church in 1976, Weir was enthusiastic about ecumenical contacts, and in 1979 he led a delegation that met Pope John Paul II during his visit to Ireland.

In 1981, Weir organized a group of Presbyterians to tour the United States to explain Protestant perceptions of the Northern Ireland conflict.
