I C6 THE NEWS JOURNAL THURSDAY, AUG. 9, 2001 www.delawareonline.com Birds give former draft pick a second chance team was looking for pass-rushing ends. Since then they added N.D. Kalu through free agency and Derrick Burgess through the draft, and other players like Brandon Whiting and Uhuru Hamiter made favorable impres-sions on the coaching staff as they got the playing time in 2000 that may have gone to Frank. "I know I didn't help myself by leaving, but I'm not going to move forward if I worry about what happened in the past," he said.

"So I don't second-guess my decision in that respect. I just missed playing football." Reach Kevin Noonan at 324-2806 or knoonandelawareonllne.com rookies, apparently ready to go. Then he disappeared. Nobody on the Eagles knew where he was for two full days. Finally, Frank contacted the team and told them he was quitting for good, and he was put on the "retired" list, even though he never played or even practiced in the NFL.

He had to give back his $63,000 signing bonus, which he got back when he re-signed this year. Frank spent the past year in Utah, working for an advertising agency and pursuing his other to become a professional musician. He plays saxophone and sings in a swing band, the Beverly Brothers. But he also discovered that football was an itch that still needed to be scratched. So now Frank is back with the Eagles after asking for, and receiving, another chance to make the team.

Frank still won't say why he disappeared last year, other than to say "it was a personal matter." But he doesn't mind saying why he is back this year. "I missed football," he said. "My love for the game never left, or my desire to compete, even last year when I left camp." Coach Andy Reid agreed to give Frank another chance, although he did ask for one guarantee "He just wanted to make sure shot, for having the guts to go to the coaches and ask for it. I hope he makes it." Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said Frank is still trying to knock off the rust he accumulated while sitting out a season. "He's having good days and bad days in camp," Johnson said.

"I think he's shown good pass-rushing ability. And he is going to get a lot of opportunities in these preseason games. We'll find out about John Frank, about how good he is." The irony of his situation is that Frank probably would have had a better chance of sticking and playing last year, when the By KEVIN NOONAN Staff reporter BETHLEHEM, Pa. A player rarely gets a second chance to make it in the NFL, especially when he walks away from his first chance. "I'm lucky to get this opportunity again," John Frank said.

"And believe me, nobody knows it more than me." The Eagles drafted Frank in the sixth round out of Utah last year, with hopes the speedy defensive end would spark their pass rush. And Frank reported to training camp at Lehigh University for Day 1 with the rest of the Former Eagles cheerleaders allege peeping The cheerleaders' dressing room adjoins the visiting team's locker room and a door connects the two. At various times, the players drilled holes through the door and scratched the paint off a small glass window to see through to the other side, the lawsuit alleges. According to the lawsuit, the women learned of the action in January, when The New York Times, citing sources, reported the alleged peeping. The plaintiffs contend that the "ability to peer into the cheerleaders' locker room, and Veach: Filling in where needed I would stick it out and give it my best shot, give 100 percent," Frank said.

"But I assured him the only way I'd leave this time is if they decided they didn't want me anymore." Reid said he was swayed by Frank's sincerity. "I listened to what his problem was," Reid said. "I try to take each situation that you run into with a player individually. There's still a human factor to the game, and I'm willing to listen if somebody is willing to tell me the truth." Said defensive end Hugh Douglas: "You have to respect the guy for giving it another teams, its players and other employees. Between the two of them, the women were Eagles cheerleaders from 1986 to this year.

Among the teams named in the lawsuit are the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos. The teams named in the suit all played the Eagles during the 1986-2001 time period. The Eagles were not named as defendants. But he will shuttle back and forth in practice.

"It just means he'll have to practice a little longer," Raymond said. "He'll start out as a wideout and then come over for technique with the backs, then when we scrimmage him we'll keep him in the ballgame all the time, either at halfback or wideout." Hen scratch Raymond, 74 and beginning his 36th season as Delaware coach, continued to humorously fend off inquiries about his coaching future. "My wife Diane says at least one more year 2001," he said, "but it could be five more." Daily practices are at 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The pads go on Sunday Recurring injuries have ended the careers of linebacker Deji Ashiru (knee) and defensive end Chris Nacewicz (hernia).

Defen- freshman James Spence, a transfer, are the backups. Freshman Deon Rheubottom will compete at cornerback. Junior Khary Darlington is the returning strong safety and junior Jasper Owens is back at free safety. Junior Edward Worthan and sophomore Daryl Cooper are the backups, with Belote fighting for a spot. Belote, a linebacker at Indian River, is focusing on the footwork required to play safety.

"I'm already in condition," he said. "I want to get my footwork down. I have raw skills, The News Journal Classifieds FROM PAGE CI "That's something I wanted since my freshman year," Veach said. "I made the adjustment to receiver and I've done well. But any opportunity to run the football is welcome to me." Veach's 4.36-second time in the 40-yard dash was Delaware's fourth best in preseason conditioning.

As a senior at Mount Carmel High, Veach rushed for 2,166 yards and 32 touchdowns. He gained 5,261 yards in his career, sparking Mount Carmel to a pair of PIAA Class AA titles. At Delaware, he has found other ways to wreak havoc. His 1,476 all-purpose yards led the Hens last year, with 815 through the air and 555 coming on kick-off returns. "I think one of my strengths is my vision, seeing things and picking out holes," Veach said.

Al Harris complained about the call, then smiled and patted the official on the back. "I didn't like the call," he said later, "but I appreciate having those guys out there making them." The Eagles had four NFL officials work their practices on Wednesday during training camp at Lehigh University. Then the officials Billy Smith, Al Jury, Ben Montgomery and Bruce Maurer spoke to the players about differences in the rules or their interpretation. "They're not shy right now with those flags, and that's the way I want it," coach Andy Reid said.

"I want to make sure they get our guys in order, so our guys understand what they're going to call this year." The heat is on Temperatures cooked in the high 90s, so, for the second day in a row, Reid ended practice early. "We're getting some work in heat here, which is a good thing as long as you're smart with it," Reid said. On the sidelines Dom Capers, coach of the NFL expansion Houston Tex-ans, attended Wednesday's practices, along with offensive coordinator Chris Palmer. The Texans begin play in 2002 and the two are making the rounds, hoping to glean a couple nuggets from other teams' throwaways. Injury report The following players did not practice and are day-to-day: LT Tra Thomas (groin), RT Jon Runyan (virus), DE Brandon Whiting (turf toe), TE Jeff Thomason (Achilles), John Romero (pectoral strain), CB William Hampton (virus), WR Gari Scott (virus), DE Hugh Douglas (abdominal strain) and WR Scott Keys (knee bruise).

Ravens running back Jamal Lewis tore a ligament in his left knee Wednesday and is likely out for the season. Lewis, who left the field with trainer Bill Tessendorf during the morning practice, tore the anterior cruciate ligament and sprained the medial collateral ligament, team spokeswoman Francine Lubera said. Lewis was a key player in the Ravens' Super Bowl championship run last season, gaining 1,364 yards and scoring six touchdowns as a rookie. Veach carried the football 13 times last year, usually on reverses, and has 21 carries in his Blue Hen career.

He looks forward to getting more. "As a running back you know it's up to you to make things happen," Veach said. "I sort of like having that ability, to know that it's all on you." The halfbacks in the Wing-T must be pass-catchers, too. Last year, Pressey and Cummings combined for 55 receptions, so Delaware would still utilize Veach's pass catching ability if he lined up in the backfield. "I like it a lot," quarterback Sam Postlethwait said of Veach's availability as a back.
