By GEOFF M0SHER The News Journal PHILADELPHIA -Seven years ago, Eagles coach Andy Reid rescued his friend, Marty Mornhin-weg, from the unemployment line after Mornhin-weg had been fired as the Detroit Lions' head coach following a two-year stint. Mornhinweg, regarded as one of the NFL's more creative offensive minds, had coached alongside Reid on Mike Holmgren's staff in Green Bay in the 1990s. Reid gave Mornhinweg the title of senior assistant in 2003 and promoted him to assistant head coach in 2004.

In 2006, after offensive coordinator Brad Childress left to become Vikings' head coach, Mornhinweg naturally filled the void. Wednesday's announcement of former Bills and Bears head coach Dick Jauron as senior assistant and defensive backs coach could allow Reid to promote another coaching pal. Jauron also coached with Reid and Mornhinweg on Holmgren's staff. "It's not something I think about every day," Jauron, via conference call, said about his aspirations to be a head coach again. "When Andy called me, I was really excited.

I was flattered that he called. I was excited about the possibility." Jauron seemed enthusiastic about returning to his secondary roots. He coached defensive backs for the Packers from 1986-1994, when Green Bay finished with a top-10 pass defense three times, and built his reputation as one of the league's emerging defensive coaches. Jauron became head coach Tom Coughlin's defensive coordinator for the expansion Jaguars in 1995, helping Jacksonville reach the postseason three times in four seasons before he embarked on an unsuccessful head coaching career.
