Walker, dealer in dry goods, boots, and shoes, groceries, glassware, etc. at Spearsville, was born in Ham- bien Township April 20, 1855, youngest of the family of Charles and Jane Walker. John M. worked for his father and attended school until he was eighteen years old, when he commenced his own account as a farm hand. He married Miss Sarah daughter of Hamilton R.

and Margaret Heskett January 19, 1882. Two children were born1 to tnis union, uisie M. and ver-less. In the first settlement in Jackson Township, Brown County, the Youngs and the Fleeners were among the first in the Township. Several families had lived on the creek as early as 1823 or 1824.

James A. Baker was an early settler, also one or two of the Weddles, John Hubbard, the Robertsons, John David, John Richards and others. In 1830 not less than 11 or 12 families lived in the township in rude, round log cabins. Bear ureek took its name from the great numbers of bears in the surrounding locali- ties.
