Title Retained by Tallyman BY BOB HEBERT Tims Staff Writer Tallyman proved to a cheering throng of 20,015 Saturday at the County Fair that the old adage of horses for courses is still true especially at Pomona.

Returning to his favorite track, the 5-year-old son of Money Broker charged to a convincing 4V-length triumph in the $27,700 Pomona Handicap, climax of the 14-day racing season at the Fair. A year ago, Tallyman won this stakes on a "slow" track and gained the reputation of being a mudlark, but he showed a rd a that it's the County Fair that he likes, fast or muddy. With 44-year-old Jack Robinson in the saddle, Tallyman toured the IV "miles in 2:04 35 and rewarded backers with a return of $11.20. Graceful Native was second, with Fine Cause, the- longest shot in the race, third. Victory in the richest stakes of the meeting was worth $16,450 to Mrs- Ramona M.

Briggs, owner of Tallyman. Favorite No Factor Makor, the 2-1 favorite off his fine second in the Del Mar Handicap, was never a factor. Last most of the way, he closed a little ground belatedly, finishing a well-beaten fifth. True Balcony, winner of the Pomona Derby two years ago, was fourth. For the third time, veteran Don Pierce rode off with the County Fair jockey championship.

Don had a closing-day double, winning aboard Senor Lucky at $7.60 and Sturdy Landing at $5.60 to end the meeting with 16 winners, four ahead of L. J. Durousseau, last year's saddle champion. On the financial side, it was a good meeting for the Fair, with attendance up 2 over last year, and betting down less than 1 .3. Total attendance for the 14-dav race meeting was 153,368, for a daily aver-! age of 10,955.

Total wager-ing was $.2,898,324. a daily average of $921,309. RACING ROUNDUP EWMARKET, England King Midas, a 10-1 long-shot, scored a three-length win in the Cambridge-shire Handicap, bringing those who drew him in the Irish Sweepstakes $120,000. Astrocan (12-1) was second in a photo-finish over Londes-borough Boy (33-1). Tula Rocket, the 13-2 favorUe in the field of 29, was never in ccn tention.

BELMOXT PARK Cougar II finished five lengths in front in the $113,000 Woodward Stakes, but was disqualified for interference in the stretch and placed third. West Coast Scout was made the winner and Tinajero was moved to second. Stewards ruled Cougar II had oothered Tinajero by cutting sharply in front of him between the three- sixteenths and the eighth pole. West Coast Scout paid $18.20. Time for the distance was 2:00 25 just two-fifths off the track record Kelso set in 1961.

LONGCHAMP, France Virginian Paul Mellon's Mill Reef will start as the 3-4 favorite over 17 rivals in today's $373,000 Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at IVi miles. An American bred or owned horse has never won the race, which carries a purse of $260,000 for the victor. Alec Head's Pistol Packer, brought from the States two years ago, is the second favorite at 3-1 after. winning his last five races. BAY MEADOWS Kobuk King, carrying high weight of 124 pounds, took the lead on the turn for home and won the $27,450 Tanforan Handicap at 1 116 miles by a length and a quarter.

Figone-ro was second and Esquiraza third. Kobuk King, clocked in 1:42 15, paid $4.60, $3.40 and" $3. Figonero paid $4 and Esquiraza $5.40. BY BION ABBOTT Times Staff Wrt'er There was considerably more than horses Saturday night at Hollywood Park. Southland Elks staged their annual night at the harness races.

Their presence swelled attendance to 23,823 and helped create the largest crowd of the current record-smashing sulky season and the fourth biggest nighttime crowd in Western Harness history. And the fans came with money to spend, setting a Western Harness record for exacta wagering by betting $149,785 on $5 combination tickets on the fourth race. The former mark was $148,790, established a year ago. Mr. Jack Wins Classy Mr.

Jack, now performing for a claiming price because of leg problems set up a $47.50 exacta payoff by scoring a $4 triumph. Hoosier Goose rallied for second to complete the winning 5-9 combination. Leading driver Bobby Williams, who escorted Mr. Jack to the winner's circle, came back for a $12.40 upset with Jazzy Admiral in one of the top pacing features. Jazzy Admit al was clocked in 1:59 35 as he trounced Nick's Painter by nearly three lengths.

Favored Fresno faded to fifth. Baby Tears Upset In the third race, Chief Red, piloted by Joe Vollaro, outfinished favored Baby Tears by three-quarters of a length in 1:59 25 for a $12.80 upset. Chief Red roared home in :58 15 for the fastest final half-mile of the meeting. The double by Bobby Williams raised his leading total to 22 for the season. The two magic miles increased the total of 2:00 efforts to 10 for the meeting.

Pointing for the Norfolk Stakes on Oct. 23 are Royal Owl and MacArthur Park, leading 2-year-olds in the West. Royal Owl won the Hollywood Juvenile Championship, and recently drilled five furlongs in 1:59.

MacArthur Park is fresh from a victory in a division of the Del Mar Futurity. The Oak Leaf, exclusively for 2-3'ear-old fillies, likely will bring together Impressive Style, Miss Lady Bug and Charger-ette, the 1-2-3 finishers in the Del Mar Debutante. A year ago, June Darling won the Oak Leaf, then stepped out of her division to beat colts in the Norfolk. Fish Report The Times accepts and publishes the catch count as a public service.
