Ta Vaulter Eyes Mark Of 17 Feet Pennel Out To Make Height This Year NEW YORK ffl John Pennel, latest and best of the pole vaulting astronauts, hopes to crack the 17-foot barrier while he is hot. "At first, I thought there would be no 'more chances for me this year," the Miami, whiz said yesterday after arriving home with the victorious U. S. track and field team. "I've been invited to several exhibition meets in the Southwest.

If I can get two pole vaulters to go along with me so it will be real competition and not an exhibition, I'll push for 17 feet." Green and George L. Beatty both scored aces. For Green, it was his first hole-in-one in 30 years of golf and he did it with a five-iron. Green was playing by himself and had it not been for workers Tommy Mendez and Roy Peterson, who were working on the green and stepped aside to let Green hit, he would have had no witnesses. Beatty got his first ace in 40 years of golf with a three-iron.

"I would like to be the first to do it. It probably will take a 17-foot vault to win the Olympic title next year in Tokyo." Pennel was one of a party of 62 40 men and 22 girls who arrived by special chartered plane from a month's tour of Europe.

The American men beat the Soviet Union, Poland, West Germany and Britain, but the women members of the team were defeated in each of the dual clashes. Dan Ferris, 74-year-old secretary emeritus of the Amateur Athletic Union, who supervised the overseas campaign, said the United States must step up athletic programs for girl athletes in high schools and colleges if it is going to meet foreign competition. "We have been trying to do this for years but somehow the programs have not materialized," Ferris said. "Our girls lacked the necessary preliminary training but they got better as they went along. I have been advocating better athletic programs in schools for our girls for years.

Will it be Cassius Clay in 1963? Probably not. Liston made about $250,000 in flattening Floyd Patterson July 22 in Las Vegas, and income tax would gobble up most of anything more he might earn this year.

Or will it be the winner of a possible match between Ernie Terrell of Chicago and Doug Jones of New York? "We would like to make it between Liston and the Terrell-Jones winner," said Harry Markson, managing director of Madison Square Garden boxing. Such a fight might go on home television rather than the theater TV of recent championships. However, Mark-son admitted he has had no contact with Liston. One of boxing's informed sources told The Associated Press that no decision would be made on Lis-ton's next fight until Thursday night. Previously there had been reports there might be a meeting in New York Wednesday night between representatives of Liston and Clay to discuss a possible championship fight in September.
