Mrs. Harkness, founder of the Rebekah Harkness Foundation, a well-known sponsor of ballet and dance groups, was not at home when the unidentified bandits were surprised by a night watchman. They es caped over a rear wall into a power boat, police said. Several police departments, police power boats and the county helicopter were called out, but the burglars eluded capture, they police said.

The burglars were scared off before they were able to take anything from the 15-acre estate, they said. Mrs. Harkness, who has not been seen by neighbors for more than a year in Snellen's Landing, celebrated her 61st birthday on the day of the attempted burglary. woman which was snagged by a fisherman in Greenwood Lake Friday. The body, apparently mutilated to conceal the victim's identity, was badly decomposed and submerged in the lake when it was discovered, according to state police in Monroe.

The woman had been dead for an estimated three weeks before the body was discovered. An autopsy on Saturday did not reveal the victim's identity or the cause of her death, police said. However, medical examiners were able to determine the sex of the victim and said that she was about five-feet-two. weighing about 110 pounds and was from 18 to 28 years of age.
