February 28 The dropout rate at Brown County High School is nearly half the statewide average for students 16 and older. The school board has obtained permission to build a new 60,000 plus square foot building to house seventh and eighth graders. The, price tag for the building is about $3 million.

March 7 County commissioner Jim Owens predicts a county referendum on planning and zoning within the next two years. An increase in the minimum number of credits to graduate from Brown County High School is proposed. March 14 The school board places a $500,000 limit on the remodeling work at Van Buren Elementary School and learns that construe-' tion on the new junior high school is at least a year of f. March 21 The county receives a $53,000 grantfrom the state for chuckhole repair. More than 20 reported to the Brown County Sheriff's Office sinceSast Monday as the county enters brushfire season.

March 28 Many county roads continue to be posted as closed and are usable only by locaK 4 rr: i rr: i I'holnln the cost of new roads, utilities, and furnishings. F.ach cabin includes two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, andja porch. Some of the 20 new cabins at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park are nearing completion. The cost of the project is $1,780,000 or $89,000 for each cabin, which includes and $300 for outdoor businesses, originally included a section to license professionals. however that requirement was later withdrawn by amendment.

The following is a recap of Brown Cqunty news in 1979 drawn from the pages of The Democrat. January 3 The county highway department budget is cu by $706,613 by the state board of tax commissioners. The area plan commission passes on its proposedNashville subdivision ordinance to the town board. The ordinance will enable Nashville homeowners to apply for, federal flood insurance. January 10 Four hundred acres of state and federally owned land are included in a new wilderness proposal.

The land is located south of Monroe Reservoir and north and east of the Brown County line. Jack Lutes is hired as the Brown County school corporation business manager while the school board notifies high school principal Richard Cole that he may not be rehired in the fall. In a landmark decision, the Cordry Sweetwater Conservancy District receives 105 acres of land from the bankrupt Investment Corporation of America. January 17 The Brown County Eagles score their fifth Basketball victory in a row. Bill Miller is named the new director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

January 31 A drastic drop in planned commercial development in the county is reported but a proposed 9.5 million improvement program at Brown County State 'Park clears an early hurdle in the state Iegisla--ture. The Brown County school board plans an addition to Van Buren Elementary School as tbe first step in its building program. February 7 Terms of the sale of Salt Creek Valley shopping complex are being finalized by Critser's Flower Shop Morgantown 697-4551 The Clarence Roberts insurance trial, two controversial ski resorts, and the passage of a new Nashville business license ordinance topped the news in Bron County in 1979. The trial, in which Geneva Roberts, Clarence Roberts' wife tried to collect insurance benefits totalling almost $700,000, did not determine whether or not Roberts was actually dead. Roberts has been missing since November 18, 1970, when a charred body was: found in his burned-out barn behind the family home.

Iri June special judge James Dixon ruled that Mrs. Roberts and her four sons should "recover nothing" from the three insurance companies involved in the suit. His opinion stated that the evidence presented did not prove that the body found was'that of Roberts. However, he did not answer the question of whether Roberts is alive or dead. Mrs.

Roberts' is currently appealing Dixon's decision and has also filed suit in federal court against the Insurance Company of North America for more than $600,000 in life insurance benefits. In other news, three groups of developers came before the Area Plan Commission and Area Board of Zoning with plans for the construction of ski resorts. Only two proposals received approval, and; that approval was given over the objections of neighborsho plaimed that the resorts would cause additional traffic hazards on State Road 46 West and also woulcLdisturb the peace and quiet pf the areas'involved. Residents also protested the applications for liquor licenses which wne made by both Long Mountain and thefNiashville Alps. The local alcoholic beverage board denied a permit to Long Mountain early in December but both liquor applications will again be heard by that board in January.

Criticisms of the plan commission came to a head when the local tax adjustment board cut out the entire 1980 plan commission budget. Members of the Brown County Recreation and Industrial Development Council have proposed the institution of a hotelmotel tax.

A proposed amendment td the Nashville town ordinance would ban street sales of any type" in Nashville. May 30 Two powerful scientific experts end the ski resort in Schooner Valley on the Reddick and McCormick-Able tracts. The Brown County Recreation and Industrial Development Council is formed to promote development in Brown County. April 18 The gasoline situation is predicted to get worse as dealers are put on allotments and gas prices soar to nearly $1 a gallon. County welfare director Gene Suding estimates that over 1,700 persons in Brown County are living below the state's standards of poverty.

April 25 Money for home mortgage and construction loans is non-existent right now at both the Brown -County lending institutions. President Carter proposes to set aside 390 acres of the Hoosier National Forest as a wilderness area. May 2 The Clarence Roberts insurance trial begins todayxand special judge James Dixon is expected to make a ruling on whether or not Clarence Roberts is dead and whether his wife Geneva and her sons are entitled to receive death benefits and interest. The plan commission approves a $1.5 million ski resort in Schooner Valley but denies a proposal for a motor sales and repair business just down the road.
