BjHss Williams Honor Guest Esther Teagrue is entertaining Merlo Alcoclc Coining "Merle Alcock," said Henry T. Finck of the New York Evening Post, "sang for an audience that was quick to appreciate the fresh beauty of tone she disclosed and to enjoy the delicate humor with which she interpreted some of the Irish songs that came later in the program." Mrs. Alcock is the artist engaged by the Music Department of the Woman's club to appear at the Senior High school on Thursday, April 20. The above quoted lines are echoes of many that tell the lovely charm which this contralto invests in her music, a sound and serious musician capable of the art, she is likewise captivating in her treatment of simple, appealing songs. The spiritual side of music seems to be reflected in the interesting coincidence that two of the country's distinguished singers, both contraltos by the way, are daughters of ministers.

Mme. Louise Homer's father was a Presbyterian divine and Merle Alcock comes from a Methodist minister's family. Tolerance that would allow a daughter to follow a professional career is soma- thing that was quite unbelievable fifty years ago, but society and religion aro progressing; matters are viewed in a better and saner lighi these days. Music is universal just as is religion; its beautiful side is becoming more and more apparen and necessary to our daily lives, anc what more natural than to have the message of fine music, carried through the world on the lips of women who were born to the church.
