1 PATERA UNHAPPY, RESIGNS 'tSSSSSRSZA FROM RAM COACHING STAFF Landry Named to Coach East in Pro Bowl I SID ZIFF Lets Play What It was a cinch to come up. What if USC had gone for the tie against Purdue and made it with 2:28 left to play? The Trojans then kick off DEEP into Purdue territory. Now Purdue finds itself in exactly the same spot as Notre Dame in the Michigan State game. Irrevocably, the burden "'J Lit 0 i Jlllillb Although the Rams had their first winning season last year since 1958, the front four had long been regarded as the most able unit on the team even in the losing seasons. A Ram official said that Allen, who was recently named head coach of the West team for the Pro Bowl Game Jan.

22, has not hired a coach to replace Patera. Patera is considered by the NFL coaching fraternity to be one of the most intelligent teachers of de-fensive football in the professional game. Ra marks Ram owner Dan Reeves has been quoted as saying that he wouldn't trade either of his quarterbacks, Roman Gabriel or Bill Munson, unless he was able to obtain another quarterback of equal ability which is unlikely However, the Rams have dealt quarterbacks off in the past without getting one in exchange Frank Ryan was sent in a package with halfback Tom Wilson to Cleveland for defensive end Larry Stephens (now a Cowboy) and two draft choices; Zeke Bratkowski was traded to Green Bay for center Ken Iman; Norm Van Brocklin "retired" and was then traded to Philadelphia for a draft choice, defensive halfback Jimmy Harri3 (never reported) and a future, No. 1 selection (Dick Bass). (8-0) 47 7321 I Jack Mollenkopf BYMAL FLORENCE Tlmat Staff Writar Jack Patera, the Rams' defensive line coach and the man who was primarily responsible for the development of the famed front four, resigned Wednesday. Patera, 34, was the only coach retained by George Allen from the Harland Svare staff. Svare's contract was not renewed after the 1965 season.

The former Oregon football star told The Times that he's leaving the Rams because he is seeking a position with more "responsibility." "George (Allen) has been running the defense," said Patera. "I'm looking for a position where I'll be a more effective coach." Patera said that he has not secured another job but he is looking for one, preferably in the NFL. More Responsibility "I want something with more responsibility. I would like to be a defensive coach," he said, intimating that he wanted to be in charge of an entire defense instead of restricting his duties to the line. Patera, who played in the NFL as a linebacker with the Colts, Cardinals and Cowboys, said his parting was a "mutual thing." "I've really enjoyed working with Dan Reeves," he added.

Patera's decision to resign came as somewhat of a surprise in view of the Rams' 8-6 record. Also, two of his pupils, Merlin Olsen and David Jones, were accorded All Pro recognition in 1966. However, sources close to the Rams have confirmed that Allen did not give Patera a free hand with the defensive line. Allen, a former defensive coach with Chicago, installed the Bears' defen- PALMS Jack Patera sive system when he joined the Rams. In this system, the defensive linemen were required to do more "stunting" changing their positions before the snap of the ball than they had done in the past.

Allen was not available for comment concerning Patera's resignation. Developed Line Patera joined the Rams in 1963 Svare's first full season. He and Svare then developed the skills of the defensive line Olsen, Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier which is generally considered to be the best unit of its kind in professional football. Allen, like Svare, devoted most of his coaching time last season to the defense. However Allen did not give Patera the coaching autonomy that Svare did.

Tom Landry, National Football League "Coach of the Year," will pilot the Eastern All-Stars in the 17th annual Pro Bowl football game Jan. 22, In Memorial Coliseum. Announcement of Land-r appointment was made by game directors Glenn Davis and David Brandman of the sponsoring Los Angeles metropolitan newspapers. Landry's Dallas Cowboys rode to the Eastern Conference championship with a 10-3-1 record, just seven years after the city had been granted a NFL franchise. The Cowboys dropped a 34-27 decision to Green Bay last Sunday in the battle for the NFL title.

Landry, a former University of Texas player, started his professional career in 1949 when he played for the New York Yankees of the old All-America Conference. When the two leagues merged, he went to the New York Giants where he spent the next 10 years as a player, player-coach and defensive backfield aide. Meredith to Play The 42-year old Landry has selected three members of his own Dallas staff to work with him, Er-mal Allen, backfield coach; Jim Myers, offensive line; and Dick Nolan, defensive coach. Landry will make his bonus selection of two players later this week. Eight men from his Dal-las squad already are members of the Eastern roster: quarterback Don Meredith; fullback Don Perkins; split-end Bob Hayes; center Dave Man-ders; defensive tackle Bob Lilly; linebacker Chuck Howley; cornerback Cornell Green; and safetyman Mel Renfro.

He clocked a record 403.1 m.p.h. in his car, also named Bluebird, on the salt flats at Lake Eyre, Australia. Campbell had been tuning up his jet speedboat for nine weeks on Lake Coniston, but bad weather had delayed his attempt on the water record. Campbell, short and dark, appeared to know no fear. But he often said that this wasn't true.

In 1960 his jet car somersaulted at 350 m.p.h. on the salt flats of Utah and Campbell, almost nonchalantly, walked away from the wreckage with nothing worse than a hairline fracture of the skull. But later he told a reporter. "I get scared when I realize how close to death we always are. He would have had to risk the fatal interception.

But all this is in the realm of speculation. In the moment of truth, McKay did the noble thing. We're all proud of him and the way his Trojans played. They regained the respect of the sports world. It's easy, in retrospect, to figure out some neat thing you might have said or done.

Haven't we all been in the same situation a million times? Given 48 hours to think it over almost anyone can be a hero. More Fuei in Favor of Catavolos We don't want to' harp on it, but in making a case for George Catavolos as the hero of the Rose Bowl game, we cited only two of his crucial contributions. An important one we overlooked was the fact that he was the one vho hit Don McCall early in the game and caused him to fumble on the Purdue nine-yard line. Purdue recovered the ball and was able to get out of danger. The second time was when Catavolos came from nowhere to force Rod Sherman out of bounds on the four-yard line.

The third was when he intercepted the ball in the end zone of USC's attempted two-point conversion. Three such plays as this transcended any amount of routine tackles. So, if we had to do it all over again, we'd still vote for Catavolos. Rozelle Justifies TV Blackout It's hard to fault NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle's arguments in making his decision to blackout the local area for the Super Bowl game. Much as we hate to give up the fight, he has a strong case.

True, he explained at a press conference, the NBC and CBS networks are putting up $2 million. But most of it will go to pay off the players, cover the expenses of the game, and fulfill the leagues1 obligation to the player pension funds. As a rough figure, $1,170,000, will go to the players, with each club getting 52 shares worth $15,000 for each winning player and $7,500 for each loser. It is a generous allotment which allows the teams to vote shares to injured players, coaches, equipment managers, etc. Game expenses will run around $300,000.

The teams have to be based in California for up to 12 days. The promotional end is also heavy. Rozelle sincerely feels that no event can be established and perpetuated before a poor live crowd. If the TV cameras focus on a half-empty stadium people get the idea the event is a flop. To be a super-anything requires a sellout.

Rozelle also reminded us that the people in Dallas raised all our arguments when the Packer-Cowboy championship game sold out. They wrote letters saying they wanted to buy tickets but couldn't. So, it was arranged to show the game on large screen closed-circuit TV in the Dallas Memorial Theater which seats 8,500. Tickets were priced at $8 as against $10 for those in the Cotton Bowl. Just 1,500 people took advantage of the arrangement.

Rozelle also believes that after this year the Pro Bowl game will be between the stars of the AFL against the NFL. It will be bigger than ever and when that time comes it will be blacked out too in the local area. Band Boosters Take the Stump Nothing stirs up the animals like a comparison of bands. "You must have a very short memory," storms reader Paul Corson, "when you wrote: 'The Purdue band topped everything the Big Ten had before The University of Michigan band has always been acclaimed the greatest collegiate band in the country. Positive proof being their past performances in the Rose Bowl.

"The Michigan band could spot the Purdue band five trombones and still beat them." Reader Michael E. Anzis is even more indignant. "I wonder where you were on Jan. 1, last year, or if you saw the Michigan State band in its two performances on TV this season, or if you have ever seen the Ohio State band. These are examples of Big Ten bands that don't just stand and play (badly at that) while their baton twirlers, flag bearers, and dancing girls put on a three ring circus.

They show great imagination as marching bands and play to put the likes of Purdue to shame. "As to West Coast bands, I don't blame you for your derision of our two local outfits. It's a scandal that this year's USC 'Rose Bowl Band' was composed of Trojan bandsmen, plus Bruin bandsmen, plus various local high school and other bandsmen, and UCLA's band last year was similarly made up." of winning is placed upon Purdue. It cannot escape the obligation. USC is taken off the spot.

Suddenly, it is up to Purdue to take the big gamble to win or to settle for the tie. With nearly three minutes to play Purdue would have had to put the ball in the air or never live it down. This is the route that Notre Dame would not take and forever coach Ara Parseghian will be in the position of having to defend himself. Now, Jack Mollenkopf and not John McKay would have had to make the crucial decision. If Mnllpnlrnnf nlavprl it.
