DECEMBER 6. 1970 QTrecords If DUl Mayfield Named All-City Mentor Tucson High coach Ollie Mayfield, who Ruided the Badgers to an unbeaten state AAA championship season, joins the Star's All-City team as Coach of the Year. The state crown was Mayfield's first since taking the THS reins in and it was the third in six seasons for the Badgers.

Other local coaches deserving of credit are Larry Hart, coach of Flowing Wells' AA-3 champions; Salpointe's Jerry Davitch, whose team compiled an 8-3 record and made the Southern Division playoff game for the fourth consecutive year; and Van Howe of Palo Verde, which posted a 7-2 record this season, a feat unmatched by any other football club in the school's It was not that easy a year for Tucson. The Badgers quickly moved to the top of the Associated Press' high school football poll and had to endure for the remainder of the season the pressures that go with the top rating. Not only that, but the Badgers were undefeated all year and were working on their third straight year of going unbeaten against local foes. Week after week, they faced teams that were fired up, totally determined to pull the upset.

Hagen, all 150 pounds of him, is the offensive captain. He was the city's top pass receiver in 1970 with 39 'grabs, six of which he turned into touchdowns. Winning, top-notch players come from the winning teams. 2.

There is still a place on the field for the little man, although he must now be an exceptional little man, Twenty of the 24 first team offensive and defensive sports are occupied by players from either Tucson High, Salpointe, Palo Verde or Flowing Wells, Tom Vosberg, who passed the Lancers to the Southern AAA-A title, and Tucson fullback Mark Simon, who rushed for 1,148 yards and averaged over ten yards a carry. Other line spots are held by Tucson end Lonnie Williams, tackles Mike Dawson of Tucson and Jerry Federico of Pueblo, Tucson guard Will Kreamer and Palo Verde center Bob Trower. The two kicking specialists are from Flowing Wells' AA-3 championship team punter Dwight Tribby and place kicker Marc Shumway. Captaining the defense is Lewis, ten pounds lighter, holds down one of the guard spots. He looks out of place at first glance, but not when game films are being re-run.

Heartfield, the giant of this trio at 170 pounds, was the leading ground gainer for Tucson High's undefeated state champions, gathering 1,396 yards and scoring 136 points. The other halfback spot goes to Palo Verde's talented junior John Stewart, whose 1,267 yards was the top regular season total for all local ball-carriers.
