In the criminal court, yesterday, Garrett Jones, colored, plead guilty to the charge of malicious shooting, and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment in the penitentiary. Bishop Quinta.nl last night fell on Madison street, and sustained a painful bruise on his knee. The injury will not prevent this reverend gentleman irom uppeanng in tne jiuipii. u-uuy.

From the first to the fifteenth in stant, the Ueaie-street eoup-nouse gave out to poor families and strangers, tnree nunureu gallons boup, allowing one pint and four ounces of bread to each person. Arewatdof three thousand dollars is offered by Albert Fink for the arrest and conviction of tbe parties who ob structed 'the Memphis and iouisville railroad track, near Brownsville, Octo ber 11th ana isovember nith, by which tne trsuns were wrecKeu. The latest novelty in the cotton- comriress line is a compress that can tako the cotton direct from the gin if desired, ana win "squeeze" tne staple to Uie capacity of twenty-five pounds to the cubic foot. One of them will, we un derstand, be erected In this city during uie weeK. Officer Peter Hackett yesterday ar rested Isaac Jones, colored, for alleged larceny of a box of collars, a window- sash and a coal-bucket.

Private dispatches received from Kansas City last evening, announce the ratification of a twonty years' contract for water with the National water-works company of New York, by a vote of, twenty-five hundred to eighty. This is the result of the recent visit of Captain F. M.

Marian to mat city. The matinee at the theater yester day afternoon was largely attended. Uie play passeu ou witn mat ease, and charm so characteristic of 'his excellent stock company, tue dramatic talent of which offers unusual attractions to our people. We are glad to know that a deserved patronage is belDg given the theater. The second chancery court has on its hearing docket fifteen hundred cases.

The hearing docket of the first chancery court, commenced in 1S70, has recorded eighteen hundred and fifty cases, which number one-half remain for trial. The first and second circuit ixiurts have each six hundred causes pending on the trial. There will be a solemn high mass in St Bridget's church on Monday next, the seventeenth instant, for the repose of the souls of all th'ise who died during the yellow-fever epidemic in that parish. Night before last a newly-married man was arrested for drunkenness, and placed in the station-house. When he met his frantic bride yesterday morning at tho Commercial hotel the Bcene was very aflecting. The erroneous statement of the Ledger concerning Chief Amy's oilicial clemency to tne unfortunate nan is untrue in every respect.

Chief -thy has never seen the man alluded to. A number of the young ladles at Bartlett are preparing lor an entertainment which will take place in a few weeks, the proceeds to be applied to the benefit or tne orpnans oi iueinpnis. Good music and several charades, well gotten up, will constitute tbeproKramine, which will be inferior to none of the entertainments heretofore given by the voung folks of Bartlett. Our friends at Bartlett may expect a crowd on the occasion. The teachers of the Chicago public schools have forwarded to Mr.

Cairns, secretary of our school-board, a further contribution of S1C6, to relieve the ne cessities of teachers In our public schools. This, with former contributions, makes SGGGsent by the generous teachersof the noble city of Unicago to aid tneir professional brothers and sisters in this city to tide over the sufferings and embarrassments of the late epidemic. Everybody is again in tho very best of spirits, and business is becoming quite brislr. The hotels are all well crowded already, and when the thousands come to this city next week to view the beauties of the Exposition, "cots in thehall" will be certain to be brought into requisition. Everything looks cheerful around town, and money is again becoming plentiful.

The name of ''Bronze John" is never mentioned, and the contrast between Memphis of yesterday, and the same day a month ago, was extraordinary in the extreme. "Time is money." There is no man in the weary rounds of business to whom this sentiment has more significance than the editor of a daily paper. From the moment he enters until he leaves his office, time is not only money, but it is I eputation to him. However socially inclined, however glad to meet his friends and to be entertained if not instructed by their conversation, he cannot possibly indulge in the pleasure without infringing on the rights of his subscribers and readers. Remember when you call on an editor, that time is MONEY.

The following contributions to the fund for our poor were received at the mayor's office yesterday: Colored Sunday-school of St. Andrew's church, Wilmington, Delaware, SIS; Rev. J. W. Andrews, Goldsboro, North Carolina, vii urn, AaiLioK uiuiu uuuuaj-4juui.

Moore was induced by the ex-official to indulge iu several drinks, and the consequence was he fell by the wavside, was robbed of thirty dollars, lost bis trunk, and was carried to the statlonhouse. Moore thinks the ex-officer drugged him for the nurpose of stealing his money. Chief Athy gave Moore money with which to obtain food, and is investigating the case. Indications are that au ex-oflicer named Kelly is the man who led Mooro astray. At a late hour In the night Kelly went to a house of ill-fame on Causey street, and with a drawn pistol demanded admittance, stating that a man had been robbed of sixty-five dollars in her house.

Kelly acted a policeman but three days, his star being pulled oir by Chief Athy, who will not permit such men to serve on his force. RICHARD H. TAYLOR, M. Secretary of Hoard of Health. The Register of yesterday thus does justice to a brave, fearless good citizen, who nsxeu uis uie anu gave up ins dus- inesd in order to nurse and attend to our poor, when the Howards called for help "Among those who volunteered was James G. Simpson.

Ho was already eneased as a visitor lor the Odd-bel lows', but he walked, to the front line a true sohlierto givd i.Lii his-time to the rener or suneriug humanity, ue saiu he was engaged one day in the week with his most noble order. The other six days he would give to the Howards and from that day till the work was over he did untiring, unceasing and un flinching service in the cause. His kind and noble heart did not suffer him to rest for a moment. In one instance, when he found four orphan children in a room being nursed by two old people who had the fever themselves, he packed the children all off and provid ed them with comfortable-homes, tak ing charge of two of them in his own house. All honor to Simpson and to all who went with him in me leanui strug gle.

We have spoken before of these boldiers who worked so bravely for our city, and we intend to continue to uo so. Memphis is proud of such men, and her people win never cease to nonor anu love and revere them." The physicians of the city are niov. in the matter of the construction of a monument to the memory of their com rades who fell victims to tbe yellow-fe ver. Among other steps taken to accomplish the undertaking, we find a cir cular signed by Doctors R.H. Taylor, F.

L. Sim and R. W. Mitchell, from which we take this extract: "The faithful phy sician who survived the storm bears in bis conscience its plaudits of duty done but our seven brothers. Williams, Free man, Crone, Hatch, Kennon, Blount, and Minor, fallen at their post martyrs to me cause or humanity, aye bright ex emplars of professional honorand duty.

sleep in their quiet graves, with more lasting glory than embalmed warriors in rules ot storied marble, uur i alien broth ers, if they could be consulted, would doubtless wish no fitter burial than quiet interment leafy jsimwoou, but pro fessioral pride demands the honor of their perpetual commemoration, and we ask in this behalf that suitable etonc be raised and carved for them. Their fame, the story of their heroism, be longs to me medical world, and our brethren throughout tho broad land are respectfully requested to contribute something to this laudable end. Your contributions, however- small, will ag gregate a success or the enterprise." List of undelivered messages re maining in the Western Union tele cranh office. S3 Madison street: C. Bullock, Wm.

Cheek, Ad Storm, Hill, Teiry M. Late yesterday afternoon a persona! difficulty took place on the forecastle of the steamer rat, cieuurne lying at tne wharf here, between Phil Starr, the mate, and a negro roustabout named Tinsley. The negro pummeled Starr over the head and choKed him severely Starr then drew a pistol and fired at the assailant, but the bullet did not strike the intended victim. When the pistol tired, mucn excitement ensued, ana at least a hundred wharf negroes crowded together. Tinsley, who seemed to be drunk, was seized by two friends and forced ashore, in order to prevent further difficulty, lor oy uns time me negroes had become indignant, and several par ties made criminal threats ngaiust the officers of the steamer 1'at Cleburne, which parted her head-line and swung out into the stream.

Alter dropping down stream about a hundred yards the boat beaded to land aft of thasteamer Henrv About seventv-five ne groes immediately rushed to the edge of the levee as it to boara tho Cleburne, whose officers discovering the purpose of the movement, rounded out again ami the boat moved down the river. Officer McCuue went to arrest Starr, but was prevented by the hasty of the steamer lrom port, btarr win be arrested upon returning, and the affair investi gated nccordibg-to law. He was beaten by Tinsley, anu claims to nave snot, in self-defense. The negroes were very much incensed and were anxiouH to mob the steamer. We trust no such scene may be repeated, for the most fearful mobs are those conducted by enraged ignorance like that of yesterday after noon.

After a lengthened discussion pertaining to various matters connected with the welfare of the society, the meeting adjourned. -tun uii i vy i luuiauav. Tim fVV. luviuns luuitjuu o.uu miuicui limner in this way: "A gentleman was hero yesterday from Memphis, desiring to learn someuuug au iul luete inaiviuuais, whose letters he had seen published Iu the Avalanche, and was surprised to leard that Dr.

B. P. Reynolds was an ex- Methodist exnorter, who had gotten in- to the medical profession through tbe, back door, aud who has never enjoyed any standing among physicians, especially since an unpleasant affair which happened this year, to a Jady who died under rather mysterious circumstances at a hotel in this city. Dr. Martin A.

O'Brennan has attained much notoriety here from his adventures in the law courts, where he sued the city for several thousand dollars, because some plaster fell on his head when he was poking around in the old courthouse, where he had uo business to be. He calculated his damages by assuming that he had been prevented from delivering a number of lectures, for which he would receive several hundred dollars a night, whereas his lectures were generelly delivered to reporters, and to members of his own family. He, too, was a graduate of Trinity college. His recommendation is one which carries no weight with It. When the people of Memphis learn the character of Dr.

Ryan's indorsers, they probably will not feel in the mood to soothe his wounded feelings, either by paying his board-bill or providing him transportation to Chicago." 3IKS. 31. A. CUTTING. OPENING OF FALL MILLINERY.

The performanced at the theater during the past two weeks have been most excellent, and seldom or ever did a stock company acquit themselves so nobly. Coming directly after the scourge, with the citizens but iU-prepared for amusement, the managment determined to show what they could do under the circumstances, and brilliantly have they performed all tho promises set forth. To Mr. C. A.

Lefiingwell, the geuial and acute lessee, and to Mr. Gobay, stage-manager, especial thanks are due. Every piece that has been produced was placed on the stage with due regard to appropriateness aud scenic effects. The many little thing, -hat go to make up a successful presentation have been carefid-ly attended to. Nothing wasslurred over, and due regard was given by all the members of the company to the proper costuming of the parts they were callttl 1 upon to personate.

This has been tbe secret of the success of the company with the lovers of tbe drama in Memphis. Nearly all of them came here strangers, but the majority have made their marks, aud have already established themselves as favorites. Particularly Is this the case with the "star," Mr. Frank Evans, who is a most care ful, pains-taking and judicious, actor. Mrs.

Claude Hamilton, by her careful reading and lady-like deportment, has won the greatest while Miss Glllman is one of the sprightliest little soubretles that has been seen on the Memphis stage in a decade. Mr. Everett is a capital comedian, and destined to be a favorite. Messrs. Lang and Knowles are artists of fine ability, and taken as a whole, the company have been admirably selected, and are certain durluc the season to give the createst satisfactieu to all the patrons of the drama, aud combine in their personations both instruction and amusement.

which is the great intention of all dramatic performances. To-morrow evening the most sublime and talented of all American tragediennes, and a general Memphis favorite, commenced an engagement.
