Chess tourney game adjourned VANCOUVER, B.C. (AP) The second game of the world chess championship quarterfinal match between grand- masters Bobby Fischer of the United States and Mark Taima- nov of the Soviet Union was adjourned Tuesday night on the 45th move.

Fischer, playing white, was a pawn ahead and in a posilion where he normally would force a win. The game was lo be con- linued Wednesday. Fischer leads the 10-game match, 1-0. The winner will advance in the challengers' round, with the survivor to meet world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union for the title in 1972. B.

Casper back on golf trail FORT WORTH (AP) Billy Casper, a mite chunkier but apparently healthy again, returned to the tournament trail this weekend says it's good to be good." The man who popularized swordfish steak flew in early Tuesday, toured the windswept Colonial course and pronounced himself fit for a run at a third National Invitational title. The 26th 125,000 NIT opens Thursday with Casper, defending champion Homero Blancas, Lee Trevino, Master's king Charles Coody and Gary Player among the favorites for the 25,000 first prize. With the exception of superstars Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, most of the top names of the multi-million dollar PGA circuit are on hand to challenge the Colonial course. Quite naturally, much attention is being focused on Ben Hogan, a five time winner here, who was forced out of the first round at Houston last week with a knee injury. He is listed as a probable starter Thursday.

Meanwhile, Casper returns to action after an absence of several weeks dating back to the first round of the Greater New Orleans Open. He withdrew after what first was diagnosed as an attack of bursilis. "Actually," he said Tuesday, "I had one of my vertebra slip. When I got home my doctor discovered my left leg was almost an inch longer than my right." He said he underwent treatment, took off a week for a fishing trip and is now ready to make another go at it. Dont discount A.

J. Foyt in the 500-mile race," said Louis Meyer, three-time winner of the rich Indianapolis Motor Speedway classic to be run for the 55th time May 29. Foyt, Mauri Rose and the late Wilbur Shaw were the only other drivers who won the 500 three times. Foyt, who won in 1961, 1S64 and 1967 "is still in his prime," said Meyer, "and the real race is coming up." The 36-year-old Foyt was the sixth-fastest qualifier last weekend, almost tA m.p.h. slower than pole winner Peter Revson and his Mark 16 McLaren-Offenhauser.

"There is no doubt the McLaren chassis is far superior to the others," Meyer said Tuesday, "bul it's a long race." It was even longer when he won in 1928 and 1933, when the Speedway surface slill was the original bricks, and in 1936, when the ends and four comers had been covered with asphalt. The entire track now is skid- resistant asphalt. Meyer has been associated with the developmenl of both the Offenhauser engine used by the McLarens and the special Ford V-8 racing engine used and manufactured by Foyt. "There hasn't been a basic change only refinements, in racing engines since Harry Mil- Larry Brown of the Washington Redskins last season became the 22nd player in the National Football League to rush for more than 1,000 yards in one season. He gained 1,125 yards on the ground.

ler combined the Ballot crankcase and the Peugeot cylinder head," Meyer said. The French Peugeot won three of the first seven Indianapolis races 1911-17 and the Ballot, also French, was a strong contender for several years after World War I. The Miller engines became Offenhausers when Fred Offenhauser took over the business.
