Rl 3 WMSfY CHBVSUR IMPORTS 1 (201) 327-8170 1 By BRIAN ZEVNIK Staff Sports Writer "When your vets aren't doing the job for you, then you've got to go with your youngsters," remarked Clarkstown North coach Tony Gemma in explaining his decision to start four sophomores and eventually use 16 men in Wednesday's game with Suffern.

Unluckily for Gemma.lt was the Suffern team that did the job in a 6-1 Mountie triumph at the losers' field. It was a masterful victory for the Mounties as they got the best of everything from both players and coach. The defense was errorless, the pitching outstanding (two hits), and the strategy was impeccable. Suffern 's Fred Furman was almost untouchable on the mound, throwing his breaking stuff inside, outside, and in the dirt, and all the while getting the same good results. He retired the first seven men to face him, gave up a walk and a line single to North's Al Ser-video, and retired the next 11 men in oder.

"Fred wasn't really as effective as he was in his last start," explained winning coach Jerrv Magurno. "He threw 90. pitches today as ed Ram hitters, one of whom complained after reeturning to the dugout after striking out, "he's got a curve that looks like it's falling off a table." Furman was never in trouble and only lost his shutout in the bottom of the seventh when the final outcome was all but decided. "He grooved a 3-1 pitch and their boy really knocked the cover off it," remarked Magurno. The North slugger was senior shortstop Bob Corley who had made several fine plays in the field already.

He led off the seventh by belting a hanging curve to the gap in left center, sprinting around the bases to screams of encouragement from his bench, and then plunging headfirst into the plate under the throw to record his well-earned home run. That last gasp turned out to-be too little, too late for the Rams as Suffern had taken advantage of timely hitting and a fine bunting game to put the game out of reach early. Pete Paradossi opened the Mountie second with a line single to left, and Brian Connor then reached as his sacrifice bunt was played to second and the runner was safe. Pete Bur-kard blooped a single over shortstop to load the bases. Brian Chiullo executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt on the next pitch, and Paradossi was across with the first run before a startled North infield could react.

After a groundout and a walk. Mike Hagon laid down yet another bunt, and soph Ram starter Servideo threw it away for a three-run error. Servideo settled down a little then, but was in trouble again in the fifth. AFter walking Tom Eschen on four pitches to start the inning, Joe Rigoli did his job on a hit-and-run attempt by getting wood on the next pitch and chipping it to center for the hit. A forceout then retired one man.

and a popout another, but Pete Burkard slapped a single to left for one run, and BI-STATE BRAKE ROUTE 59A NANUET, N.Y.
