Tyson-Spinks showdown uncertain The Salina Journal Wednesday, June 17,1987 Page 19 Prices Effective Thru Sunday, June 21, 1987 at Salina ALCO Store Only. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) Michael Spinks said Tuesday In the aftermath of his fifth-round knockout over Gerry Cooney that Mike Tyson is "a young man a lot of us wouldn't want to climb into the ring with." But in the ring is exactly where Spinks will meet Vi in November, if promoter Butch Lewis has his way. "I think it is a very interesting fight," Cooney said at a news conference Tuesday. "Spinks is a boxer.

He's very elusive and Tyson comes in. Spinks will have to slow him down when he comes in and gain his respect." Tyson was at ringside Monday night to see Spinks demolish Cooney. As for his own future, Cooney said, "Right now, I'm not really talking about my future. I had a tough night last night. I'll take a few days to decide what to do." Asked to sum up his career, should he retire, Cooney said, "I'd have to say we had a lot of fun.

I had some ups and downs. I had a lot of injuries and some personal problems." It was the second loss in 30 pro fights for Cooney, who was stopped in the 13th round of a World Boxing Council title bid by Larry Holmes June 11, 1962. Spinks Monday night's fight was billed by Lewis as being for the heavyweight championship of the world, although Tyson is recognized by the WBC and World Boxing Association and Tony Tucker is recognized by the International Boxing Federation, which stripped Spinks after he refused to agree to a mandatory defense against Tucker. Spinks might not be a champion in the eyes of the three governing bodies, but his two knockdowns of Cooney, who was stopped at 2:51 of the fifth round, certainly established him as one of the two premiere heavyweights in the world along with Tyson. "I never look at myself as to what I've proven to anybody," Spinks said.

Tyson and Tucker will fight Aug. 1 in Las Vegas, to unify the three titles. Tyson's managers, Jim Jacobs and Bill Cayton, also have planned fights for him against Tyrell Biggs in October and against unnamed opponents in December and March. They have indicated a Tyson-Spinks fight might not be possible until the fall of 1988. Lewis said he would call Jacobs and Cayton sometime next week.

"Their schedule might be more for the media than the realtruth," Lewis said. As for Jacobs and Cayton having Tyson fight at least four more times before he meets Spinks, Lewis said: "I don't think Jacobs and Cayton, doing such a fine job so far, would jeopardize a major fight coming off. "If they continue to go down the road with the Tony Tuckers and Tyrell Biggses, the public will get turned off." Spinks said he wasn't concerned about the date of a possible Tyson fight. "Whichever way it's planned, I'll be ready," he said. He certainly was ready for Cooney, overwhelming his 6-foot-7, 238-pound opponent with barrages of punches that left Cooney helpless.

The first knockdown came after Cooney missed with a vicious left hook. Spinks caught him with a crackling right to the head and followed with a barrage that put Cooney down. From the time Cooney was hurt by the right, he never tried to hold. "Inexperience," Spinks said of Cooney's reaction. "He'd never been hurt much in a fight with Larry (Holmes) and he did the same thing with didn't grab." Spinks, who weighed pounds, moved from left to right to confuse Cooney but he never dodged the issue, darting inside to land stinging jabs and combinations to the head.

"I had to show him I was more of a man than he was," said Spinks, who boosted his record to 31-0 with 21 knockouts. DISCOUNT erone POOL CARE CENTER WE CABBY A COMPLETE LINE Of POOL CABE PRODUCTS U.OO REG. 4.44 pH Raises pH total alkalinity. Granular buffered soda ash. 4 Ibs.

Rodman's comments came after he covered Bird in the NBA Eastern Conference finals that Boston won in seven games.

Pistons guard Isiah Thomas then Rodman stoked the controversy when he said he agreed with Rodman. Thomas apologized on national television during Game 2 of the NBA finals between Boston and the Los Angeles Lakers. Rodman apologized Monday in a Dallas gym. "I regret what I said," Rodman said. While he wouldn't say if his feelings toward Bird have changed, Rodman expressed regret for speaking on the subject in the first place.

"It was one of those things that never should have been said," Rodman told the Dallas Morning News. "It caused a lot of commotion. Really, I've already said enough." Rodman said he didn't feel much heat after he made his remarks. "Everybody has been talking about all this," Rodman said, "but there haven't been that many people bothering me." On May 30, Rodman said: "I don't think he's the greatest player. Why does he get so much publicity? Because he's white.

You never hear about a black player being the greatest." Thomas' follow-up remarks: "I agree with Rodman. If he (Bird) were black, he'd be just another good guy." Trickey returns as ORU coach TULSA, Okla. (AP) Ken Trickey, whose Oral Roberts University basketball teams were among national scoring leaders in the early 1970s, became head coach of the Titans again Tuesday. Trickey, 53, succeeds Ted Owens, who resigned under pressure last Thursday after two years as Oral Roberts coach. Trickey had returned to the school as Owens' assistant in March.

"We want to bring back an explosive, evangelistic style," said Richard Roberts, executive vice president of the school. "We want to make basketball an event." Trickey had a 118-23 record and three postseason appearances as ORU's head coach from 1969-74. The Titans led the nation in scoring in 1972 and 1973. Trickey's 1974 team came within one game of advancing to the Final Four, losing in overtime to Owens' University of Kansas team in the Midwest Regional finals. Trickey was the Iowa State coach from 1974-76.

He coached in high school and junior college from 1977-79 and Oklahoma City University from 197941. In January 1986 he was named head coach and athletic director at the new Oklahoma Junior College. His team was 25-9 in its inaugural season. Owens was 21-35 in two seasons as Titan coach.
