656-6628 or www.ssam.org FROM PAGE D1 Nefare Townsend of Newark. She finds an emphasis on universal principles of love, peace and harmony And each summer she goes to the Brandywine River for a festival named for the goddess Oshun. Oshun embodies feminine power and is the patroness of rivers. She is associated with the ability to create love, beauty and fertility. (An image of her adorns a wall of the Maat Temple.) Townsend attends the Oshun Festival to celebrate the beauty she finds in her heritage.

She wants to teach her children to love that heritage, too. "I was raised in a Christian home, and my husband and I teach our children that background as well," she said. Christianity inspires many of the temple teachings. Like Christianity, African traditionalist worship refers to a Supreme Being and angels. Omowale knows a good deal about Jesus, because prior to starting the temple, he was a minister with the Church of Christ.

It's a denomination that has much in common with the Mennonites, he says. "Being a minister was rewarding, but I find this even more fulfilling," he said. "I feel that I'm a conduit for people to learn something they wouldn't otherwise know. I believe I'm doing God's work." Omowale has found pride in learning about Africa and traveled to Nigeria 15 years ago. He's returned many times, often with his wife.

Two villages were impressed by his commitment and bestowed honorific titles. At 53, he is known as "Double Chief Omowale." His wife is also a chief. la 1 tAv i-- Wilmington native receives gospel award 2 Crabb Family, LordSong and more.
