The west coast had variable cloudiness and some fog. NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY Weather history was being made. Hurricane Doria struck the Mid-Atlantic coast from a seaward angle, the first time on record of such a happening for this area. And since it scored a direct hit from the sea, tides are much higher than would. be the case with a similar storm moving up the Atlantic coast.

Meanwhile, Beulah approached the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean and could develop into a massive hurricane over the very warm waters of the Gulf. Chloe was about 525 miles south-southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, moving north at 14 m.p.h. Highest winds were estimated at 100 m.p.h. All of the hurricanes are under careful surveillance by either weather satellite pictures, radar or aircraft reconnaissance. A large blocking high pressure system continued over the Northeast, sustained in part by warm air pumped inland by Hurricane Doria.

The weather map showed little over-all change in almost a week across the United States with deep and nearly stationary pressure systems dominating. Normal west-to-east movement ceased. And the steering westerlies aloft were displaced far northward, close to the Arctic Circle. As a result, much of the country -was under above-normal temperatures for the season with a light wind field and fair skies. Temperatures ranged from a low of 32 at Butte, to a high of 104 at Palm Springs, Calif.
