TUCSON, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1982 THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR PAGE TWO SECTION David Fulcher picks ASU SftLE tartS TODAY ends Sunday, feb. 28 BICYCLES, LAWN GARDEN TOOLS MUCH MORE! OPEN SUNDAY By Bob Moran The Arizona Daily Star TEMPE Los Angeles Fremont High School defensive back-wide receiver David Fulcher did indeed sign a national letter-of-intent with Arizona State, school officials said yesterday. University of Arizona football Coach Larry Smith had said Thursday that Fulcher, whose brother Mark was a quarterback at the UA last season, was still unsigned, and that UA assistant Willie Peete was still recruiting Fulcher in hopes of getting his signature on a UA letter. But ASU assistant Willie Shaw said he got Fulcher to sign an ASU letter "around 12:30" Wednesday, and Sun Devil assistant Dan Underwood had a letter-of-intent that bore Fulcher's signature. Underwood called the UA football office late yesterday morning to clear up the confusion.

An ASU spokesman said Fulcher hadnt-jh-formed the UA of his decision. Fremont, an inner-city school whose athletes are often overlooked by USC and UCLA, is considered to be a UA stronghold. The school has sent to Tucson such players as baseball centerfielder Dwight Taylor, long jumper Donnie Butler, inside linebacker Glenn Perkins, flanker Charles Nash, high jumper James Frazier and Bruce Hill; the most productive (6,054 yards) quarterback- in school history. Hill, a member of the UA athletic Hall of Fame, is an assistant football coach at Fremont who tries to steer Fremont athletes to the UA. ASU Coach Darryl Rogers said he will not release an official list of recruits until Monday because a player ASU is recruiting has told the schools interested in him that he will decide this weekend.

So Arizona State basketball Coach Ned Wulk, feeling a little slighted, took the opportunity earlier this week to remind folks his basketball season was still in progress. "I think you'd be interested to know," Wulk said, smiling, "that the program is continuing. And we've got two lightweights coming up." That Wulk is trying to keep his team in the spotlight is rather surprising considering ASU has an 8-12 record, and by Wulk's admission should be 12-8. But maybe Wulk is hoping for some decent crowds at the University Activity Center for tonight's 7:30 Pacific 10 Conference game against UCLA and Monday's 8 p.m.

meeting with Southern Cal. The Sun Devils will be seen by a lot of people because both games are being televised (tonight, nationally via cable). But Wulk would like to see more than half the 14,287 seats in the UAC occupied. ASU's largest crowd this season is 6,206 for the finals of the Fiesta Classic in December. If any two teams can draw they are UCLA and USC, and both are playing well.

"UCLA is as good a team as there is in the conference right now," Wulk said. "Right now, they're probably stronger than Oregon State. "And SC is playing just as good overall as UCLA." The Bruins (8-3 in the Pac-10, 15-5 overall) defeated Arizona, 88-73, last night at McKale Center. ASU (3-8 in Pac-10 play) had disappointing losses last weekend at Washington (by four points) and Washington State (by two in double Despite the defeats, Wulk said he is, encouraged by the play of 6-foot-10 center Phil McKinney, a freshman from Tempe Marcos' Niza. McKinney started against WSU and scored 12 points.

"We've been dangling him in and out of the lineup; finally, in desperation, we started him," Wulk said. "He gave us the best scoring at the center position since (Warren) Everett a million years ago against Irvine." Everett had 22 points against Cal-Irvine in December. McKinney, who has been given the nickname "Praying Mantis" because of his slight, 190-pound build you look hard enough you'll see a muscle," Wulk said), will start again tonight. McKinney has been practicing against 6-8 Sam Williams, a member of last year's Arizona State team. Williams, a rookie forward with the Golden State Warriors, is in Tempe working out against the Devils as part of a rehabilitation program for his injured right foot (stress fracture).

"He's getting good opposition now," Wulk said of McKinney. "McKinney's got a lot of enthusiam and quickness." Wulk said to beat UCLA, the Sun Devil defense must slow down the Bruins' running game. "They got 29 points off the transition game," he said, referring to the Bruins' 75-59 victory over ASU in Los Angeles last month. "That's our biggest problem. We have to do something about it." SUN DEVIL NOTES: Wulk acknowledged 6-9 junior-college transfer Corey McMullen has had trouble at center.

"Yes, he's been a big disappointment," Wulk said. "He does not have a good Shot, and he has a lot of trouble hanging on to the bail in traffic. It gets knocked away. He doesn't give us anything offensively." ASU received bad news this week when 6-6 Carson, swingman Eldridge Hudson, reputed to be the most talented player in Southern California, gave a verbal commitment to Nevada-Las Vegas.
