PAGELABELTAG S6 THE PALM BEACH POST REAL NEWS STARTS HERE I THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2013 THE LANDMARKS Lake Worth: Town Jewels The Casino The Lake Worth Casino the best-known icon of the city 'where the tropics begin' has a history nearly as long as the city's 1913: Lake Worth Bath House The first "Casino" was called the Lake Worth Bath House. Materials for the building had to be hauled across the Intracoastal Waterway on barges, since no bridge existed until 1919. The Lake Worth Bath House was just north of what is now R.G. Kreusler Park, which itself is just north of today's Casino. A The 'new casino pool' in 1922: A saltwater pool with four diving boards.

1922: Lake Worth Casino and Baths The Lake Worth Casino and Baths opened in 1922 -and it really was a casino, with gambling, until the early '30s. This structure stood until the elements and hurricanes forced a revamp in 1947. Note tunnel entrance at left. The 1950s casino had a shoebox look. Florida Photographic Collection 2013: A Casino for a new century The city's greatest asset the 19-acre Lake Worth Casino complex got a $6 million renovation from 2011 to 2013.

Lake Worth City Hall Fighting fire with architecture When built: Dedicated Nov. 28, 1935 Why it's important: This was Palm Beach County's first fireproof building; it was also designed as a hurricane shelter. Interesting facts: The building sits on site of the first Town Hall, erected in 1915. Its architecture is Moorish-Mediterranean. Lake Worth City Hall, 7 N.

Dixie Highway City Hall Annex Built on a historic site When built: 1916 Why it's important: City Hall Annex sits on the site of the first schoolhouse in Lake Worth (initial enrollment: 24 pupils; the wooden structure was built in 1912). A new concrete school, built in 1916, operated until the 1928 hurricane. Once repaired, the building became Lake Worth City Hall in 1929; in 1973, City Hall was moved to 7 N. Dixie Highway. Interesting facts: In 1989, City Hall Annex was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
