From the Vicksburg Herald. Jackn, March 13, 1870. About sunrise this morning the news spread far and wide over Jackson that "Ed. Yerger had escaped." Of course everybody was on the qui viv to learn how, wiien, and by what for it was not deemed possible that h-could escape unaided. A brief resume of his manner of confinement and treatment will not here be inappropriate.

When Mr. Yerger was first transferred to the civil autaoritiv by the miiiWrv, lie was wrath that hs should be confined in the common cells of the jail, and the sjiieriil, Capt. Lake, on the promise of Mr. Verger and his friends hat he would not attempt to escape, allowed him (Yerger) to have Un freedom of the jail yard, and to sleep at night in one of the rooms flih-d up for attaches of the jail. This was pending his application for a writ of habeuf mmmrn, un yesterday the application tor a writ postponed to thesecon'd Monday in April, its rejtorted by tei--grapb, and the Sheriff was notified by Verger's friends that they would no longer pledge their honor in consideration of the privileges heretofore allowed him, but Mr.

Some journals make bold to argue in favor of abandoning the island to tho United States. This proposition is bitterly opposed by the majority as cowardly and unpatriotic. In the Cortes yesterday, General Prim, in answer to an inquiry as to the circumstances of the attack on him in the streets, states that the mob surrounded him shouting "Down with conscription," and threw stones at him.

He declared that in future the Government would deal summarily with such disorders.
