Ol BEADS I PIPN TCHAr Family was terrible. On the following Friday Jerry had to buck Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, a formidable pair in any laague. They were co-starred in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." But it was the third Friday when Jerry decided the a were really against him. NBC pre-empted Accidental Family Bin YES.

Each time he brought my name up, somebody would yell 'Jerry Van Dyke' like he'd said 'Sonny If this show goes down the drain, you won't sell me with 40 Sheldon. Leonards," Jerry concludes. His feelings aren't salved by the fact that brother Dick knocked about in TV longer than Jerry before striking it big in the Dick Van Dyke Show. There was the CBS Morning Show, ABC's Mother's Day show, a string of appearances on Garry Moore's daytime show and three series pilot films none of them sold), which Dick went through without any ringing success. "But Dick's name didn't mean anything then, so those things were forgotten," says Jerry.

"Now the name means something, and they remember me from my last flop." In Accidental Family, Jerry plays a nightclub comic, which is what he was before attempting a TV career. He may have to go back to that, if the dire to air President Johnson's ad dress on Vietnam. "I sat in front of my set stunned. There wasn't even an announcement that Accidental Family would be back the next Friday," Jerry wails. "In this business you've got to have such confidence, and I never did, so I'm beginning to wonder about myself.

I'll tell you, I could use a success about now, and I believe this is a good show, but we've got to get out of that Friday night." Jerry's last series, which he doesn't defend, was a thing called My Mother, the Car, and was on two seasons ago. Prior to that bomb he was on 12 of Judy Garland's CBS shows. The film package, which in cludes such major productions as "The Cardinal," "Cat Bal- lou," "Lord Jim," and "Dr.

Strangelove," 1 is being nego tiated with Screen Gems, a mostly-owned subsidiary of Columbia Pictures. The transaction was reported to be complete except for me signing of the contract. The cost to ABC was not disclosed. ABC refused to comment on the purchase. A network spokesman, who asked not to be identified, said: 'It is not our practice to comment on a e-film negotiations be cause of competitiveness with the other networks." He added, however, that the network "is constantly buying pictures to add to our inventories for our Sunday and Wednesday night movies." Screen Gems would only say mat "We are still negotiating with two networks on a film package." It refused to name the other network or to name any of the films in the pack age.

However, it was reliably learned that ABC has negotiated the deal as part of a long-range plan to flesh-out its motion picture library for 1969 and the early 1970's.
