The only disheartening aspect of the change is that the move will force some people out of their jobs, including sportscaster Bill Roemer. One of the great mysteries of Channel 11 is that almost David Hatfield from the time it signed on the air in the late 1960s, the station has dared to tread where few other independent tele ft CD ABC NIGHTLINE MOVIE () "The Caretakers," a 1963 drama starring Polly Bergen and Robert Stack. Most of the nation's independent stations stay with brief news-headline update reports, such as those that Channel 11 will be airing when it officially makes the change Sept. 21. This columnist has been among those who have long admired the challenge Channel 11 gave itself and would look the other way when things went wrong. Others weren't so kind, and Channel 11, especially its newscasts, were frequently the butt of jokes. "They named it Channel 11 after the number of viewers who watch their news," was a joke several years ago in the Tucson Press Club's annual Gridiron Show, which pokes fun at just about anything.

Lately, though, even the most forgiving of us have been forced to look upon Channel H's newscasts as nothing more than a joke especially since the 9:30 p.m. edition of "Newsroom" follows the fine half-hour newscast from "Independent Network News," which will remain on Channel H's schedule. The night of the funeral for Sister Clare Dunn, Channel H's reporter said she was "the first Catholic ever elected to the Legislature." Mistakes such as that could hardly allow anyone to regard Channel H's news seriously. While the decision to drop the half-hour local newscasts is welcome news for viewers, unfortunately some good people are getting hurt. The station's news department will field only two reporters, who will be responsible for filming and editing their own news stories.

George Borozan is being retained and will do most of the update reports. But Roemer, who was one of Channel H's brightest stars, is being dropped. The official announcement from Station Manager Harry West says: "KZAZ will no longer have regular sports segments in its evening news updates, therefore Channel 11 will no longer need a full-time sports director." Roemer said it was "a bombshell" when he was told of the station's plans, particularly since the ratings for "Newsroom" have never been higher than recently. He said he wants to stay in Tucson, especially since his parents and his brother's family also recently moved here. "I've been here now going on seven years and I'm getting my roots here.

I don't want to leave," he said. Roemer started in Tucson television at KOLD, Channel 13, and in 1978 moved over to Channel 11 because the independent station offered him the opportunity to do play-by-play announcing of sports events. Channel 11 holds the rights to carry the upcoming season of University of Arizona basketball games and West said a decision on who will announce them has not been made. It's possible, he said, that Roemer may be brought back to help out if the sportscaster doesn't go to work for a competitor. Channel H's longest evening newscast under the new schedule will be five minutes, slotted at 9:25 p.m., just before "Independent Network News," which moves to 9:30 p.m.

weekdays. The new prime-time schedule on Channel 11 will continue with movies beginning at 7 p.m. each weekday. By dropping the local news half-hour, the movies that run long will be allowed to go until 9:25 p.m. without disrupting the schedule.

On nights when the movie runs only two hours, "All in the Family" reruns will be shown at 9 p.m. The half-hour of local news now shown at 11:30 a.m. will be replaced by a half-hour combination of some news and some public affairs programming on Oct. 5, when a new mid-day edition of "Independent Network News" goes into the 11 a.m. slot.

Almost overshadowed by the revamping of the news are some exciting prospects on Channel H's fall schedule. "The Muppets Show" will be shown twice a day at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and "Saturday Night Live" (edited hourlong tapes from the original group) will be shown each weeknight at 10 p.m. From 3 p.m.

to 6:30 p.m., Channel H's schedule will continue to be directed to children with "The Flintstones," "Scooby Doo," "The Munsters," "Bewitched" and "Brady Bunch" plus "The Muppets Show." "Here's Lucy," the comedy series starring Lucille Ball, her children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Amaz and Gale Gordon, will be rerun for the first time in Tucson at 6:30 p.m. It originally ran on CBS from 1968 through 1974. Night owls will be happy to know that Channel 11 will air a movie double feature each weeknight beginning at 11. Radio Dial Today's Highlights weeks they have to prepare new Super Bowl routines.
