The illustrious Miller, Esquire, made a lengthened speech favor of the claim, covering a vtat extent of territory in his legal expositions of the law and the prophets. The affair was referred to a committee of "three. A committee, consisting of Esquires Glisson, Walker and Holman was appointed to inquire into the bills of all Sheriffs. DLSTKK 0. 10. Lafayette Depot, June lo.

Previous notice having been gi ven, a large and respectable number of the citizens of Civil District No. 10 met in convention, Saturday, June 15th, for the purpose of sending delegates from this district to attend a County Convention, to be held at Somerville on the seventeenth instant, for tbe purpose of nominating a requisite number of gentlemen to fill the respective offices in Fayette county. U.K. Eppes, was called to the Chair. On taking it he explained the object of tbe meeting.

Mr. C. L. Turn-uer was elected Secretary. The following gentlemen were ap- i i pointeu ueiegaies: t.oionei j.

i. oiair, A. J. Green, W. T.

Stone, W. H. Groyn, J. D. Parker and J.

H. Abbington. This convention, believing they express the wishes of a very large majority of the citizens of this part of Fayette county, unanimously agree that Colonel R. F. Looney, of Shelby, is our preference to represent this Congressional district in Congress.

After these proceedings the convention adjourned. E. EPPES, Chairman. C. L.

Tchsxeb, Secretary and the bex to him, I say Is not correct. I will stab- the facts briefly: I In formed Mr. Amonett that the late Judir SelDy requested me to stay ny him until he died, and to take care of all his effects; he then suggested I had better lock his door, as couia not nna tn key, 1 went to Mrs. Crook for It, and she said there was no key to the door. I told Mr.

Amonett so, and be then suggested had I better net the Judge's keys, and lock the box and the drawer. 1 bought be said bring the keys and the box in the room where I wa, as I had been charged by tbe Judge to take care of it, I locked them, bat did not remove the box. On my way oat I met Mrs. Crook. She asked me did I have the keys? I told her yea.

Then she asked, had I locked tbe box? I told her I had. She said, give me the btyi and the box, which I did, she taking them, carrying the box to her room. Mr. Amonett did not UU me to bring the box to him. I can say he (the Judge always looked on Mr.

Amonett as a friend, for on the same day he died be said he would rather aee Mr. Amonett and Dr. Dickerson than any one else, and the reason was he thought he had known them so long. her JNNIE BROWN, mark Wltneased by Hiuisltr FY'. A few words in addition to the above will suffice.

As regards the aiiate, the mistake was not of my own creation. My proper name was signed to the manuscript and correctly published In the Ledger. The mistake occurred in the Appbal office. My friends of that office will make the amend. It was a typographical error.

Eds. Appeal. The low-flung language used in the Crooked article is beneath my notice. The trick to divert public attention from the main facts is too thaUotc. My reputation as an honest gentlemen needs no propping; my long residence, acquaintance and business relations in the city are sufficient.

The late Judge Selby had loaned me money on several ocasions, takinir mv simple notes therefor. These were paiJ. He would accommodate me when he would no one else, having full faith and confidence in my integrity. in July last, he proposed to loan me more money, saying he would rather I would have the use of it than let it lay idle in the bank. I took eight hundred dollars and gave him my simple note.

This I intend to pay, without any Crooked means. In reply to the postscript of Louis Selby, believing the manner in which it was obtained, and the inff nee brought to bear, and In memory of hit deceased father, i will simply pass it, by saying Louis, is too well known about town. In regard to the will spoken of, I have no interest whatever. Judge Selby made our office (Provine A Amonett) his headquarters, and from frequent conversations had with him in relation to the disposition of his property, I flfealy believe he made a will wtthWthe last eight month entirely different from the one spoken of. In respect to other portions of his card, I simply reiterate what Is contained in my original card.

And now, in dismissing Crook from my further notice, I take leave of as dirty a dog as ever wore tbe garb of man. JAMES IRA AMUNETT. Gratefully appreciating the flattering compliments, which have been paid me through the public prints, as well as the kindly expressions parti-ily received from many citizens, in connection with my candidacy for Representative hi the State Legislature, I cheerfully yield to my friends the use of my. name as a candidate for the nomination for a seat in the lower branch" of next General Assembly. In doing so, I must express my gratification that, by the action of the Democratic Executive Committe, the ques tion has been remitted to the people, the repository of sovereign power, to de termine at the ballot-box their choice of the candidates for notnuxation for the several offices to be filled. As nominations have become indispensably necessary to secure success to the standard-lie are rs of the Democratic party, it is well that the largest and fullest expression of the sense of its voters should be Invoked in the selection of their candidates, and if I am not their choice for the posit'on to which I aspire, I do not want the nomination, and will gracefully yield to their decision and again take my place in the ranks, and will exert whatever Influence I possess in behalf of the nominees. Now, how can Democrats support him for Sheriff of Shelby county, when a good many colored men have supported that party, I wish to The Radical negroes are supporting A. P.
