Since the Memphis and Charleston railroad reduced their rate of freight, this market has bean unusually active in corn and other classes of grain. Orders have been large, taking sll the corn on the market at high figures. Thirty thou sand sacks were Bold to-day at sixty cents.

This la the result or low freights Within the last few days a colony ol beavers made their appearance on a creek thai runs through the Stephenson term, near Horn Lake. In an astonish-lnsrlv short time tbey bad cut down sev eral trees, eighteen inches through, and were busily engaged at work constructing a dam. The neighbors set traps and succeeding in catching one, but broke his leg in tne process. The Hibernian society at its meeting Monday night elected the following officers for the ensuing year: John Loague, president; James Rellly, vice-president; William Walsh, recording secretary; Joseph Walsh, financial secretary John Lillv. treasurer.

This benevolent society Is in a very flourishing condition st present. As soon as the facta were made known she waa promptly ordered to leave before breakfast, which ehe did, and did not remain as stat-d in the Ap peal of tbe 4th instant. The whole truth should be told." Our special from Jackson is Indicative of the progress oi tne aiemphis ana seima road.

When the road is completed even to Holly Springs, the wholeeum proposed to ha expended by Shelby county will be refunded before the subscription made by tbe county Is wholly paid. The Irade of this city with Northern Mississippi will be augmented annually one niil.ion dol lara. What sublime folly was that of Payette county which prevents the immediate construction of two or three roads through that county which would make the county almost a city I The fire committee of the general conn ctl bad a meeting yesterday evening with the view ot straightening out things in tbe department. The removals, it appear have b'en more numerous than was at first thought. About half dt z-n have been Jerked out of office, or rath er, out of position.

It is said the ap pointments were all made to fill the vacancies thus forcibly created. There is one, however, wMcn must be confirmed bv the board. The committee wisely leered J. Doyle to fill the place of An drew Kiley, engineer, resigned lrom Two No better choice could be made. Mr.

Doyle knows all about an engine, served his apprenticeship In tht machine shops of Cubbine fc Ounn, and has had practical experience in the cbargt- ol engines for years in Memphis. Me will be endorsed by the unanimous vote ot tbe council. Tbe assessors of tbe Seventeenth an i Fourth districts of Shelby county did not riotly ofcserve tbe provision of the legislative anaotment vhtch exempts one thousand dollars worth of property from taxation, and therefore, ssaesaed everybody who owned anything. The texos were paid, tut it became n-ceesary eftor ward to refund the tax to those who were no; bless'-d with one thousand dol iars worth of earthly goods. Justice Bleckley has been relanding those taxes for some time.

Bavloy Its VeJae and Cowl A BsSMsUoai fee the CeMtBMtlL The question of the adoption of a sys tem of Fire-Aiarm Tel seraph will be one upon which our oity government will be called upon to act at their meeting this evening. And it is a question of vast Importance. In providing means for extinguishing fires, the rapidity with which these mea-s oan be sppUitd, after the oo ourrenoe of a fire, la proporly regarded as tne nrst consideration. Scarcely any fire could make headway if tne means for extlnguacing it were within the Immediate oontrol of those who discovered it. A Ami will spread in ten minutes to an extent that will often require one, two, and three hours to sut- du it; ana vary often thousands of dol lara worth of property li destroyed be cause of the delay in getting the apparat us in service, EVERYBODY KNOWS that a few mo menu time at the breaking out of a tire are of in finitely more value than hours after it gets under headway, and the vain of a reliable system of fire, alarm telegraph, whiob affords tbe means of giving not only a prompt alarm in case of nre, out oi indicating its exact local ity cannot be oyer rated.

These propositions are so self-evident that no argument cr array of facta a needed to enforce them. But it may not be out cf place to call atlontion to the fol lowing poiirrs: First That there is nothing expert mental about the Fire -Alarm Telegraph. It 1b now in use in over fifty cities of tbe United States and Canada, and it is every where endorsed as prompt, reliable and efficient, it is an assure! success Second That its use may be properly regarded aa very Inexpensive and yet very valuable insurance on every man's property, for it will bring the fire department within easy call ol every bouse in the citv. Third Its introduction into Memphis cannot be opposed on tbe grounds that It will be either very expensive in its intro duction or in cost Of working. WB ABB IKFOBMBD that this system, which is fully indorsed and moat extenaively used, ia offered full and complete in all its ports, and for use throughout the entire city for $10,000.

An operator or watchman not being required to attend to it or keep it in order, it cannot cost but a mere nominal sum to keep the batteries supplied and the linea in perfect working condition. We Ire reliably Informed that tbe insurance oom-naniea of theo'ty hays piomised to loan ib 110.000 neoeteerr r- ntv for this er ratns on terms satisfactory to the city au thorlties. If so. we see nothing in the way of its immediate adoption. NOT A SMART NEGRO.

A Little Watch Episode Which Lands Negro In Anil. Mr. H. Cranmer, "tbe man of business' of the polioe force, strolled on tbe levee yesterdsy to observe tMngs and to inhale the fresh breezes that constantly blow off the river, wmie passing: aoggery in contemplative mood, Ms practiced eye was attracted by the glittering of a gold watch in the bands of a youngish negro. who waa offering It for sale.

He would part with it, be said, for thirty dollars. Mr. Cranmer invited the boy out doors, and asked him, aa a favor, to walk up town, whiob he did. They conversed very confidentially cn tbe way. "Young man," said Mr.

Cranmer, "that watch la an old chronometer that must have been in full running time when M. ses was boy." 'Yes," ssid the negro, "dat's so; Moses waa my father's name; be ive It to me twenty years ago." "Why," re marked the astute detective, "you don't appear to roe over twenty yourself. exactly my age," chimed in Pomp "My oie man give me dat watch de very day I was born, for a present, an' I nave it since." Yon are from Mississippi suggested tbe detective. I is dat," said the boy I'm from Ox ford." Let us go ap," sold Harry, "and see Captain Athy. We might dispose of this watch to advantage." Having left the negro in uspt.

Atnvs office and ob served tbe number of the watch (4972), Mr. Cranmer oat stepped down toCiark's and propounoed a few pertinent inquiries which brought ont the following pregnant tacts Tbe watch was entered on the books at Clark's -esms make, description and number. It was sold nome years ago to Mr W. T. Avent, of Oxford.

Miss. had been in tbe bouse for repairs only a few months back, and was valued at 160. A OOOO MAN. Who la He? -A Country Church The Editors Appeal The citizens of tbe Thirteenth drstiiot commenced a praise worthy undertaking at the 1st of January. Tbey are erecting a Methodist church seven miles from the city, north of the Horn Lake road, in the vicinity of Colonel F. O. Stephenson's.

The church ia a frame structure, ana large enougn to seat two hundred people, it waa a difficult undertaking from the fact that it was to be bailt by donations of lumber from each oltisen, and the workmanship was to be done in like manner. Tbe ladles of the vicinity area 1 busy securing donations of any articles whloh might be needed for the edlfloe. A aohooi-nouae is added to the church. One of the church solloltora went to town Monday and made an appeal to one of our chief philanthropists for aid. After de-taninj; the facts, the relator wan astonished when his friend remarked, "here is an unlimited order for all -the dressed weatberboardlng you may need from the foundation un." You oan imagine bow the ladles felt when they heard this.

The contribution lessened their labors enor moualv. Ail sot of this kind will not be forgotten, especially since It waa given by a Memphis gentleman who never visits a country ohnroh, THB BEAVBRS. A new sensation ia the shape of sport has presented itself in the Thirteenth district. Several beavers are to be seen in a running stream which divides Colonel Stevenson's fsrm. Of late they show themselves daily and are making the trees aloDg-the bank fall dallv.

It takes one no time to gnaw one through for tbe purpose of eating the bark off when it rat is. a trap wsa set si one of their dams day before yesterday and one caught, but the skillful beaver released himself before his captors made their appearance, by b'tmg on his -own leg and leaving It behind in the trap. Considerable skill has to be used to capture a beaver. A trap must bo sat bo that when the animal enters it. it must fall into tbe water in order to drown the beaver.

If this practice is not adoDted the beaver will escape every time. The weight of the trap carries its contents to the Dotcom ana thereby drowns the animal. THB FARMS.
