Thi horse was impounded ln the Overton tables, It Is the remark of all visitors to oar city that Memphis contains more amnse-mint-loving people ln proportion to population than any other city of the country. Themes has excited In the people an appetite for orchestral music that will not be satisfied with less than the beet performance of the works of the beet oom-poaers. Country merchants will find Memphis as cheap a market for every description of goods aa any in the country. Our facilities are unsurpassed for quick and expeditious delivery.

By river end rail we can ship ln all directions. We can nevermore think of a violin as inseparably associated with the "rollicking rams" of this sinful world. To "Ave Maria," as chanted laet night by these instruments, surely angels bent down to listen in rapturous ecstacy. Advertisers will please remember that the Weakly appbal is published every Tuesday. The next addition will be an unusually lar- one, and therefore tin exceptional advertising medium.

Bend in your favors before Sunday. The friends and admirers of Mr. Bindmsnn hsve no more excuse. The departure cf Thomas's orchestra leaves him a fair field. He ought to have a crowded house to night, at the matinee to morrow and to morrow night.

We don't like to be too urgent, but in the interests of the people we sre constrained to again oail the attention of the city authorities to the filthy condition of the streets, and ask that a force sufficient to put them in good oondition be at ones employ rid. Two darkles were arrested yesterday by Sergeant Arrata, and brought to neo's room for identification They ex actly suited the description given of the assassins who made 'he attack on him Tuesday night. They were found not to be the men. A negro went into a clothing store next to Roper's grocery and took a pair of pant with which he rn away. Being hotly pursued by Officer Duffy dropped the clothing to lighten himse'f He was overhauled on Oayoso street and lodged in the lower statlonhotue.

When Miss Krebi was first encored li at evening at the operahouse she osme '0 the piano and payed only the firs', strain of some musical composition and withdrew. It was the irtico to a temple of matchless, tastefal architecture- ths froth, as German would say, on a foaming figin of delicious lager. For the past three days the Peabody hotel, inhabited by Thomas's orchestra, has teen a living temple of music From sixty spartments there have bubbled up little rills and fountains of music that fl 4 into one another at the operabouee, and then rolled away in heaving billows, a very ocean of melody An unfortunate woman who had lodged ln the house No 40 Washington street, was found dead in her bed yesterday morning. The Raleikh railroad company propose to make thst institution a genuine production of Shel otunty from begin blng to end. The roadbed will be ready for the iron in the coarse cf a month. The attention nf the county authori ties is called to the horrible condition of I he roads in the immediate vicinity of the city. That by which funeral processions ti-uslly reach Elmwooa cemetery is tro l'dlv cut up and so broken into "ruts" and boles that it is svoided, and carriages now have to taks another and more circuitous route, whloh, if the present spell af weather continues, will soon be ln as bad condition as the first. Something should be done, and immediately, to rem edy the evils complained of. Tne path to the grave snoaid at least be a smooth one.

The Wbxklt Appbal for next week, which will be ready on Tuesday will be in usuny interesting. A publisher's advertising columns sre his main source of income, snd no one has any more right to ask for tbe gratuitous use ot the same than he has to request the freedom of a slothing store, that he may help himself to what anlu him. AMUSEMENT. Tbi Last Thomas Ooscbbt.

The flnaie performance ot the Thomas orchestra last night was given to the largest sudienos ever asssm Bled on any occasion ln Memphis, The programme which we ublisbtd yesterday, was strictly aanerea to and It performance was aa much tbe eu eject of eulogy aa those cf ths two proceeding oeoawtons. Miss Krebs again challeoned tbeadminttlon of her aadienoe. as much for wonderful ezbibition of memory aa for her execution which cannot be excelled She was iond'y encored for her performance of ber part of the "Polonaise Brillante" of Weber, tbe Instruments tlon to whloh by Lslst Is an effective so aomnanment as rendered by the thor ongbly drilled oroheetrs. So, too, for tbe nocturne of Chopin snd tbe caprice of Rubinstein, she was again 'ouaiy enoor- ti. She responded tn both instances and very much the delight and satisfaction of those who have learned to appreciate ber as an artitte of the highest class Her peculiar distinction as a pianist lias in rapidity of execution, dear, distinct enunciation, and sympathe'lo modulations Tbe performanoes by tbe orchestra were all of the high char scter, for which tbey are famous.

The first thst claims attention is tbe "Ave Maria" of Gounod, whloh was decidedly the chef d'ovvre ot the evening. Mendelssohn's sobers Reformation Symphony comes next, then the symphonic poem "Lea Prelrdes" of Liszt, wbich is beautiful and clear musical elaboration of the passsge from Lauisr-tine's "Meditations," commencing "What is life but a aeries of preludes to that unknown song whose Initial solemn note is tolled by First ws had tbe enchanted dawn of life tn a movement for violins that expressed the lusp ring emotion which our aglisb word love beet expresses; then the crashing storm which disperses youths' illusions. This is succeeded by the calm of rural lite, and that bv the final crash of battle The fantasia "Visions ln Dream," with solo for Zither, was beard wltb breathless atten-t on and an encore secured repetition of the closing psasage with the cither solo. The overture "Lenorc," ot Beethoven, the march "Tannhat user" and the waits Weiner Freaken," by Strauss, were especially well received, appealing aa they did to the popular taste. Taken altogether, this programme was feast of good things, offered tantalizinglv and temptingly ln print, but executed with a rare fidelity; with an excellence that defies criticism and deserves only the words of praise wbich at the close fell in rapid and confusing suoonesion from every lip.

We thsnk the Thomas orchestra for the opportunity their presence here hss afforded onr people of hearing the most classic music, under circumstances so favorable, and interpreted so truthfully. They have awakened here a desire for orchestral music that they themselves can only satisfy, and we shall "long" im-oaMenily for a second visit. We say "Qood-bye" to them with regie, snd envy the trest in store for the people of Nashville, before whom they will appear to-night. They came to us as missionaries of art, to disseminate a knowledge of tbe capacity of music to express all the emotions of i be human heart. Their lesion, so delightfully given, was with pleasure received, and he scholars, so apt, are lost in tbe first reverie, amid which the poetic truths of music are dawning upon them to strengthen their desire for another visit from the masters.

And thus we wait. Theater "Narclsse" was again presented last night to a very fair house. The piece was, if possible, more srtlsticaiiy put upon tbe stage than on Wednesday night, snd the audience were no les9 Ibe story embodied la tbe play Is interesting in itself, while tbe sin-gulsr misfortunes of Nareitte, as represented by Mr. Bandmann, evoke the warm sympathies of the coldest nature We gave a brief resume of this interesting story in yesterday's A ppk The acting of Mr. Bandmann whi wandering about tbe streets of Paris, abandoned by bis beautiful wife, may ba regarded as the very highest style of histrionic art.

Tonight the fashions ble one for Memphis theater goers will be the benefit of Mr. Bsndmsnn. The programme is an inviting one As there- will be no other plane of amusement opan in the cltj it is but fair to expect very full houss. Theie will be three pieces: "David O-srrlck Hsppy Pair" and "Riugh Diamond This is bill which will furnish a splendid entertainment for the orowd of people that will be sure to visit the theater. Those who have not seen Mr.

Bandmann ln Memphis would do well to take this opportunity to become acquainted with oue of tbe greatest artists now occupying the American stage. Las Mr. Bandmann have a rousing benefit to night. Rbadincs fbom the Gbrmab Posts The loll wing no-- will be read wi'h treasure by oar German oiticens. We have little doubt they will be able to make arrangements for the promised "treat" that will satisfy Mr Bandmann snd gratify a large number oi people.

By all means let us, have one or more readings irom the German poets: Peabodt Hotel, Mbthis, i February 2B, Esttobs Appbal In you' issue of this morning, your dramatic critic suggests that 1 should give a reading from tbe German poets befjre my departure irom Memphis, and that mvcoubtrymen have expressed desires to that effect. I thank them for tbel oourtesv and kiudness. but r-gret that it is Impossible during my present visit. I should, however, be moat happy to comply with their request on my return Journey (which will be snout six weeks) the German residents will make arrangements to that effect. Allow lie.

The agent who is to be asked to "come home as soon as pom be, and drive pills until hell freesia over," evidently knows a ihlng or two sbout the staple.

The epistle is aatea MxHPH's, Jan. 80, 1873. 8. B. Kill, Boston, Mast.

Mt Dear Bib -We received a dispatch irom or aoout a week ago atating that be had sent an order by ex press, wuu samples, for five hundred bales of cotton We supposed as it was coming by express it was unlimited order or it would not have been sent by express, snd as we needed money about that time, we concluded we wouid use your money and get it out of tbe commissions of this five hundred bales ot ootton. I will now explain the nature of the order; the asm pies sent olaassd good ordinary, and was to be bought two cents below the price ot low middling; that was impossible to fill Tee price of good ordinary, below low middling, is ihjpe quarters Instead or two cents. The next asv after we received this order we received a letter from him revoking the order, and giving as an order for fifty bales, to be laid down ln Providence, for eighteen and quarter oants, when tbe same oo. ton is worth in this market nineteen aod a half cent. So vou see what a fools they are.

I think it is the D.iotor's fsult I wrote to tue fool when be first went there about the price of pickings that D. Walker wanted, and gsve him the priceof sucn cotton at scm twelve and a half to fifteen and half cents. The Doctor thinks that all low grades ot ootton oan be bought lor the same price now that could tusn Hi does not appear to know that ootton I advanced four cents since that lime We fear hs hss ruined the whole thing; be has told tbe ip nners that ordinal and good ordinary could be laid down there for 18c. He had the audacity to write to us, that we could make lo per pound after filling at limit. Sacb en idea never was heard ot before.

We have written to him to come home as soon as possible snd sit down snd drive pills until hell freezes over. am very sorry thst we used your funds. We would not hsve done It, but thought we had a sure tnicg. will send yon tne dispatcn. Yours respectfully, B.

THB address to tbe graduating class was delivered by Dr Erskine. He said thst in this last de-par leg hour of tbe collegiate year he was reminded of tbe stage of tbe boy from lhe threshold cf bis home ss he went forth to the outer world on life's battle. Hers-calla many scenes of youtb and childhood which be looks upon with regret, but he la full oi hope for tbe future, and he go- forth boldly to conquer success, nothing doubting about the future. The past Is but a tissue of memories the to ore is bright, snd there is nothing bat a series of grand euece- sea. So they go forth from their alma mater to achieve a great success in the wsy of tbelr profeaaion.

In partiDe from the college with a title which she had bestowed upon them that of doctor ot dicine he, the minister ct that Alma Mater, wouldsay a few parting words aa a sort ot last ble sing from the institution where they had gained their first successes in the medical profession. He would spak to them upon the subject of inductive philosophy. He said that philosophy had its acts gin in tbe eastT The remains of that philosophy are atUl visible in tbe ruins that are still found far away beyond tte Mediterranean sea. even upon the mountains of Asia, it than passed to Greece, where it became a power f.r good and for evil. It found expression ln the arts of Greece, and was embodied ln Its dally life and laws, and ln its beautiful mythology It paused thence to Rome, from whence it passed down to the middle sges and was merged ln scholasticism which waa again supplanted by tbe Reformation, which overturned everythirg end destroyed all reverence for great names and great principles and threw mankind out upon a wide sea ot doubt.

Then arose the inductive eyetem ol philosophy first broached by Descartes, celebrated Frenchman. A few years afterward.
