Significa CONTINUED An Aircraft Carrier Made of Ice During World War II, the Allies seriously considered building a gigantic aircraft carrier made of ice. The British inventor Geoffrey Pyke called his unsinkable ship Habakkuk, after a minor prophet in the Bible. It was to measure 2000 feet long by 300 feet wide and weigh 2 million tons. Pyke developed a slow-melting, impenetrable form of ice by adding sawdust. He called it '"pykrete.' Once his calculations were finished, he sent his data and some pykrete to Vice Adm. Lord Louis Mountbatten. Intrigued by Pyke's wild idea. Mountbatten took the pykrete sample to Winston Churchill in 1942, who received him while soaking in a bubble-bath. Mountbatten tossed the pykrete into the hot water and. to their amazement, the ice did not melt. When demonstrated at a Quebec conference in 1943, a .38-caliber bullet ricocheted off a block of pykrete. Pyke was authorized by the Canadian government to build a scale model of the Habakkuk at Patricia Lake in Alberta. The 1000-ton ship, powered by a one-horsepower motor, was bombed, strafed and torpedoed, yet sustained only minor damage . Still, many naval commanders refused to accept the icy idea and the Habakkuk project was scrapped. Disillusioned. Pyke adopted the motto "Nothing must be done for the first time."
