I Boone Next Foe- ESTHERVILLE DAILY NEWS, DEC. 7, 1973 5 Lakers Top Empire ByPATPARKS "We started to slow down a bit in the first half and consequently they got back in the ballgame. Once we started running and pressing, we took control of the game again," said Laker coach Ben Hix after his cage team won their third straight, downing Sioux Empire, 08-82, on ILCC's Emmetsburg campus last night. Estherville's Bob Grems paced the Lakers' assault, scoring 25 points and hauling in 22 rebounds. "Grems had another fine game," Hix added.

Dunning scored better than he has been and Tets Pettiford came off the bench and did a fine job for us." Dunning contributed IS points and Pettiford tossed in seven more as the Lakers rolled to a 55-36 halftime lead. "They pulled within two midway through the first half after we had a comfortable lead. They are a much improved team over last year," Hix commented. Hix went to the bench early in the tilt and got good showings from Doug Brandt, Jon Kreiger and Pettiford. Brandt had 10 points, Kreiger had six.

Henry Bruce hit 14 counters and snared 12 rebounds. "We had 36 turnovers, which is very bad," Hix said, "but this was our first game out of Estherville's gym and I thought we reacted fairly well." Fouls were a common occurrence last night, three' Dunning, Bruce and Brandt picked up four apiece. Sioux Empire had three players foul out of the contest. "We were a little tired, but we pushed ourselves enough to win," Hix said. "We're off to a real good start this year and if we can win Saturday, it will be a real tribute to the young men on the squad." The next ILCC opponent is Boone Junior College.

The two here SaJtucday.sigbt. According to Hix, they are also a big team. Boone's Blaine Stevens stands 6-8 and Dave Collison and Perry Galuska are both 6-5. "They're unpredictable," Hix "They had a couple fine outside shooters last year, but they're both gone. Now they have a possible inside threat with the three big men.

They are an entirely different team this year." Saturday's game will be the fourth contest of the season and the fourth of this week for the Lakers. "We've played quite a few ballgames in a short time Sports in Brief' Cyclones Go for Two AMES, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Slate Cyclones will seek their second consecutive dual meet victory tonight when they host Big Eight Conference foe Nebraska at Hilton Coliseum. "They're not particularly tall which is an oddity for Storm Lake," Hess commented, "but I look for them to try anything and everything to shut us off from the basket." The Tornadoes, whose tallest man is 6-2, have two returning lettermen on this year's cage, team. Dave Felton, 6-0 forward, and Terry Brodsacjt, 5-10 guard, are the two letterwinners that will lead the Tornadoes' attack. "They have also got a couple of juniors who have been scoring well for them.

It appears that their offense hasn't jelled yet. But 1 expect them to play us real tight, defensively," Hess added. Coach Hess has seven possible starters. Jim Willey, Bill Fenton, and Jim Bothwell have been rotating at the guards. Kevin Buell, Tom Hall, Gary Schmidt and Brian Guge have shared the duties underneath.

"Bothwell and Hall came off the bench against Cherokee and played real well for us, but that doesn't mean they can't start," Hess said. Storm Lake was beaten last weekend by a surprising Sibley General team. The Tornadoes were smothered in their season opener by Spencer. "We are going to try to get a good, balanced offense going again to win this one," Hess concluded. Midget Grapplers In Algona Estherville High School's grapplers will knock heads with wrestlers from Cedar Falls, Waterloo Central, Storm Lake, Clear Lake, Perry, Crestwood of Cresco and Algona at Algona Saturday in tournament action.

"This is a little tougher competition than what we faced at Carroll," said head coach Dee Brainerd, "again, it will be up to the individual wrestlers, we just don't have the team strength to win a tournament like this." Brainerd said he thought Algona and Cedar Falls would probably be the two top teams, but none of the other schools will be pushovers, either. Estherville's lineup will remain the same as it was for the Spirit Lake dual: Sifrit, darken, Mike Ryan, Brobst, Peterson, Hill, Boever, Mike Moller, Johanson, Miner, Bland, Tostenson. "I thought we did pretty well against Spirit Lake," Brainerd added, "if we continue to improve we should start winning some meets. Tournaments like this one give the team valuable experience." Estherville's Ryan, who placed third at Algona at 105 last year, should do well this time around, also. "I think Sifrit and Miner also have a good chance of placing high, if they go out and wrestle well.

But that's not saying I expect to lose all the rest," Brainerd added. The meet begins at noon, Saturday and carries on through the evening. Consolation matches begin at 7 p.m. A-one second fall rule, as used by colleges, will be in effect for the tourney. "I'm all for it," Brainerd said of the regulation, "I think it makes the wrestlers try for that pin a little harder.

They get more aggressive." The Midgets are back on the road again Tuesday night, when they meet Storm Lake on the Tornadoes' home mat. Are You Hung DOOR HANGING?
