Broadway near Kolb Rd. 885-6748 Sierra Vista: 1801 Fry Blvd. 459-0220 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Northern J. Calloway, an actor on the public-television children's series "Sesame Street," was charged with aggravated assault yesterday after he beat up a woman and ran naked along a street breaking out house windows, police said. Calloway, 32, of New York City, was in Nashville last weekend to perform at the opening of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, spokesman Brooks Parker said. Parker said center officials thought he left Nashville Sunday, but police said Calloway apparently was on a week's sick leave. Calloway was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital and treated for minor injuries before being taken to Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute. Officers said Calloway beat Mary Staga-man of Nashville on the head and chest with an iron. The woman was treated at a local hospital for head wounds and broken ribs as a result of the attack, officers said. Calloway reportedly was a guest in her home. "He beat her so hard with the iron that it tore the iron up," said Raymond McWhor-ter, one of the arresting officers. Sgt. Joel Goodwin said the man did extensive damage to two homes. "I don't know what was wrong," Goodwin said. "He went on a rampage through the neighborhood. . "The man didn't have any clothes on," he said. "He was running around the neighborhood hollering. Those people were scared to death." Neighborhood resident Douglas White said he fired a shot into the air after the ! ) gf Northern J. Calloway man ran through his yard wearing only a T-shirt. Calloway, who has played the character David on "Sesame Street" for seven seasons, has a long list of theater credits. An actor, singer and dancer, Calloway played "Leading Player" in the London production of "Pippin," and later replaced Ben Vereen in that role on Broadway. He also has appeared in the Broadway shows "The Prison Tree" and "The Me Nobody Knows" and the off-Broadway rock musical "Salvation."
