me ARIZONA DAfLY SfAR MONDAY, MARCH 31, 1951 AGE FOUR SECTION A U.S. Expects Sputnik Data From Russ Adlai Says U.S. Lost Opportunity Stevenson Says America Should Have Taken Initiative In Suspension Of Nuclear Tests NEW YORK, March 30 Adlai Stevenson said Sunday "we have lost the great opportunity we had to take the initiative" In suspension of nuclear tests. Stevenson, who proposed in his 1956 Democratic presidential campaign that the United States suspend tests unilaterally, was asked in the Project Vanguard satellite program, said the United States has the capability to send a rocket to the moon within a year or two. President Eisenhower last week ordered the Defense Department to go ahead with work on "lunar probes" preliminary expeditions to the moon's vicinity.

Hagen was interviewed by Rep. Ostertag (R-NY) in a program filmed for television broadcast in upstate New York. Asked how the U.S. and Russian satellite programs compare to date, Hagen said, "I think we are going along pretty much even-Stephen at the present rate." In another TV program (ABC Open Hearing), the commander of the missile test center, at Cape Canaveral, said the United States probably could get a man to the moon and back within the next 10 years. Ma.

Gen. Donald N. Yates of the Air Force said unmanned rocket flights to the moon can be made much sooner. "Several shots will be sent to the moon in an effort to get some pictures of what Is on the moon," he said. Yates said that if a rocket passed within 1,000 to 10,000 miles of the moon it could gather "good Information." Dr.

John P. Hagen, director of a television interview about re WASHINGTON. March 30-An American IGY official said Sunday the United States has made no effort to decipher data from Russia's Sputniks because it expects the Soviets to supply the information voluntarily. The statement was made by Dr. Richard W.

Porter, chairman of the U.S. Earth Satellite Panel for the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The IGY program, in which Russia also is participating, calls for international exchange of information gleaned from such IGY projects as the launching of both U.S. and Soviet satellites. Porter said in a television Interview (ABC College News Conference) that Russia probably will share data collected by the Sputniks once it has been decoded and analyzed by Soviet experts.

He estimated this might take 8 to 12 months and said the United States Is "reasonably confident" the Russians will "tell us all about it." Kirk Douglas Arrives For New Movie Film star Kirk Douglas reached Tucson last night, filled with plans for his new picture, "Showdown at Gunhlll," on which he and co-star Anthony Quinn will start shooting today. Hall Wallls will produce and John Sturgis will direct the movie. Contrary to an earlier erroneous report, Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis will not be appearing in this film. A western with a "twist," "Showdown" will be filmed on some of the same desert locations near Nogales where the Douglas-Lancaster film, "Gun Fight at the OK Corral" was made a year ago. Douglas said his most recent film, "The Vikings," made by his own company, Bryna Productions, will have its New York premiere the end of May.

Married and the father of three boys, aged 2, 11 and 13, Douglas said that the two older boys are now in eastern schools while the baby is with Mrs. Douglas in their Hollywood home. Douglas added that only part of the film is to be shot here. ports the Russians may do so on their own. "We originally could have taken the initiative in proposing that we save mankind from the horror of nuclear weapons. We didn't do it.

We thought it better not to. I think that was wrong. Then the Russians seized the initiative and they proposed It." Saying that the Russians even offered inspection at last summer's London disarmament conference, Stevenson added: "One of the great problems we've had is the secrecy neurosis of the Soviet Union. "It seems to me we should have made these proposals ourselves. The best way to break the disarmament deadlock is through the instrument of Light rain it expected over the mid-Atlantic states and the central Appalachian today.
