Family sends special thanks to the TMC Hospice Unit and Staff. MAYER, Merrylees 1934 2000 To the sorrow of her family and many friends Merrylees Mayer died unexpectedly of a heart attack in her home in Tucson on June 25, 2000. Merrylees was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Woodworth of Lafayette, Indiana. Her mother's family had strong Indiana roots, including a member of Purdue University's Board of Trustees. Her father was a sports writer and publicist for Purdue's athletic program and inspired her literary talent and inclinations.

She earned her undergraduate degree with distinction in pre-medicine and English and a Master's in English Literature from Purdue, where she remained after her marriage to teach English to disadvantaged students and to serve as an Instructor in American Studies. She was married for nine years to the late George H. Mayer, a distinguished American historian who taught at Purdue University and at the New College of the University of South Florida. During this time she also went with him to Washington, DC, were she worked as an editorial assistant for the American Chemical Society, and to Malaya where she taught English and American institutions at the Dewan Latehan College, a responsibility that she found both enjoyable and rewarding. In 1964, she became Executive Assistant to Dr.

Henry Koffler, then Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University. She thus found her future processional niche, applying her energies, insights, and fine human qualities to ensure the smooth operation of senior administrative offices at a series of leading academic institutions. She accompanied the Koffler family to the University of Minnesota (1975-82), to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1979-82), and most recently, to the University of Arizona in 1982, where she served as Assistant to the Academic Vice President, Chancellor, and President, respectively. Merrylees was a sympathetic listener and handles difficult situations with diplomacy and human warmth. Wherever she worked, she earned respect, admiration, and affection of her colleagues both for a total dedication to her responsibilities and for an ability to work effectively under stressful conditions.

She could always be relied on for a kind word, a helping hand and a shared laugh. Merrylees derived immense pleasure from helping others and, in this way, put a human face on the administration of large institutions. She retired from the University of Arizona in 1996. She was an avid reader and splendid writer. In more recent years, she revived her old interest in singing, and took great joy in practicing and performing with the Masterworks Chorale and various University choral groups.

She also continued her teaching as an active participant of Literacy Volunteers of Pima County. Among the beneficiaries of her service was a blind person. Ironically, she developed macular degeneration, a devasta-ting experience for someone as actively engaged in reading and writing as she was. She is survived by her brother, Maurice Woodworth of Perth, Australia; and her former sister-in-law, Margaret Woodworth Fowler of Blacksburg, Virginia. She also leave the wife of her uncle Maurice Wmf eld, Catherine Winfield Nichols of Sarasota, Florida; and her cousins, Nancy Marinos of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Abby Mortenson of Albion, Michigan, as well as three nieces, Jenny Woodworth of La Grande Oregon, Margaret and Taylor Woodworth in Australia; and a nephew, Robert Woodworth of Gainesville, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to support the University's choral program may be sent to Professor Robert A. Cutietta, Director of the School of Music at the University of Arizona, P.O. Box 210004, Tucson, 85721. Checks should be made out to The University of Arizona. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, July 15, 2000 in the first floor gallery of the University Museum of Art.

Lunch will be hosted after the service. Parking will be available in the Helen Street Garage. We will miss her painfully. Arrangements made by ARIZONA MORTUARY UNIVERSITY CHAPEL Tiffany Watkins, girl, June 26. Lesti and Randall Webster, girl, June 26.
