An example is the one Action shows are the favorites followed by the variety programs and although many people complain about not having more educational type shows, they seldom watch them when they are made available, the study shows. By VAL ADAMS 1M New York Times News Service NEW YORK, May 4 Art Carney will star in "The Last Comedian," an original television play about a society of the future in which laughter and comedians have been outlawed. It will be staged by "Du Pont Show of the Week" Sunday, June 2, from 10 to 11 p.m. over the NBC network. Lewis Freedman, producer, said the script had been submitted by Ernestine Barton, a 27-year-old native of San Diego, who had not previously written for television.

In the on-the-air authorship credit, Miss Barton's name will be linked with James Ambandos, associate producer, who assisted Miss Barton in revising the script. Locale for happenings in "The Last Comedian" are not identified geographically, Freedman said. He added: "Art Carney will portray a comedian in a future period when comedy has been banned. It is against the law to make people laugh. This last comedian is a fugitive going from town to town and giving black market performances." Miss Barton, who moved to New York from San Diego after selling her first television script, is now at work on another TV drama.
