TUCSON, FRIDAY, APRIL 15. 1977 THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR SECTION PAGE ELEVEN KGUN's Pat Stevens going to L.A. tamsdbuf tested Lower in tar than all the Lights By DAVID HATFIELD The Arizona Daily Star There is a numb television news director walking around town. Pat Stevens, who has been news director at KGUN, Channel 9, for the past five years, is leaving after May 6 to become the executive producer of the 11 p.m. news at KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

"People ask me if I'm excited about the change, and 1 can't say that," she said Channel I3's newscasts, which have fallen victim to CBS's ratings downfall, have improved immensely in recent weeks, both in coverage and in the technical department. Word from Jack Jacobson, KGUN's program director, is that ABC is planning another roulette game with its schedule at the end of May. "It's hard to keep up with all of them, they're coming in thick and fast," Jacobson says. And if he finds it hard to keep up with them, pity us poor viewers. Finally, a comment on Monday night's telecast of the "Television Critics Circle Awards." As a show, it should get good marks.

It was nothing spectacular, but then again it wasn't as dreary as most of the recent Emmy award shows, so it must count as an improvement. As for the awards themselves, it was pleasant to know that other critics who voted feel the same as with the notable exception of giving the comedian award to Carol Burnett, bypassing Johnny Carson, a real comedian. Burnett's humor reaches for the lowest common denominator. It's devoid of taste and about as funny to watch as a sewer over flowing. Indeed it is a rare opportunity.

KABC, owned by the ABC network, is in the nation's second largest television market, and the 11 p.m. newscast is the top-rated newscast in the city. "It's an awesome responsibility," she acknowledged. Her departure has KGUN hunting for a new news director soon after it lost its assistant news director, Jim Swine-hart, to Portland, Ore. Dave Overton, an extremely capable newsman, has taken over the duties of assistant news director and could be in line for a second promotion.

Station officials also say they are looking outside their staff for a news director. Stevens will leave Channel 9 after 11 years and one month at the station, during which she has handled virtually every news assignment. Another ex-KGUN-ite, Russ Stockton, has moved up to take over duties as the news director at KOLD, Channel 13, replacing Charles Boyd, who resigned to go to work for Arizona Public Service. Stockton, who formerly was KOLD's assignments editor, had been a reporter there for about years. Before that he was a reporter at KGUN for three years.

As a former competitor of Stockton's on the news beats, I think he is an excellent choice for the KOLD job and his news judgment will be an asset. tar nicotine mg og mg og Extra Mild 14 10 Extra Mild 14 1 0 K. "I'm just numb." The numbness is understandable. Stevens went to Los Angeles last week to interview an' intern at KABC-TV for a job at KGUN. She said she did not hestitate to accept, because such opportunities don't often present themselves.

But there are other combinations where declarer may gain a trick by asing the same lactic, he says.

To illustrate his point, he gives this hand Irom the recent Team Trials, which determined North America's representative in the 1977 Bermuda Bowl competition. If the auction seems strange, it is because North-South were employing transfer bids over no trump opening bids. Thus, Kisenberg's two diamond bid actually showed hearts. The rest of the auction was natural, and Billy's final push to six clubs was because his team was in arrears. East-West were employing third-and fifth-best opening leads, and West chose to attack with the five of diamonds.

The normal play would seem to be the jack, but Eisenberg unhesitatingly called for the deuce. He reasoned that, even if West had led away from the queen, East would have to exhibit great fortitude to insert the 10 from A-10. Also, there was the possibility that East held both the ace and queen. East could not read the position and played the diamond queen. Declarer ruffed, entered dummy with a trump and led the king of diamonds.

East covered and declarer ruffed. With the jack of diamonds established as a discard for declarer's spade, Eisenberry lost only a heart tnck and the slam rolled home.
