Four years ago, he decided to share his good fortune. He got the idea to be a Country Santa, told some of his friends and the project snowballed. Last year, he delivered a bag of toys, food and clothing to 65 children and 35 adults in the two counties. Because he has adopted three children and because economic times are hard this year, the number was reduced to 25 children and 13 adults. He said he limits the number of families he helps, because he wants the visits of Country Santa to make a difference.

The gifts are donated by individuals or organizations usually, but some are purchased with money from people who have heard about Country Santa. Early on Christmas Eve, several trucks are packed with the goodies, destined for families suggested by schools, churches and individuals. It takes all day to make the deliveries and many of the truck drivers get lost on the muddy back roads to some of the homes some no more than lean-tos. Cox tells the children he was given the toys by a man in a red suit. Cox said some of the homes are hard to believe.

He remembers a Pickens County home he visited last year. "I couldn't believe anybody lived there," he said. "The whole place was leaning to one side like it was going to fall down." The house had a dirt floor "and chickens and children were walking in and out of the doors together," he said. "All of the children were beautiful. They had blond hair and blue eyes.

If they's had baths, they'd have looked like little angels. "These kids aren't special. They get nothing for Christmas year after year. This may be the first ray of hope in an entire year for them," he said. "For just one day, they can be made special." GREENVILLE, S.C.

Buddy Cox, the Country Santa, is well known. Cox knows what it's like to see hard times at Christmas. He grew up in rural Cross Hill and his father left the family when he was 14. "I picked cotton for 2 cents a pound, drove a school bus, anything to bring money into the family." The hard times reflected on his Christmas as a child.

"When you're a kid, you feel hurt by it," he said. "Every child wants a nice glittery toy. There's nothing selfish about it."
