Shortly thereafter, despite warnings from his friends, Gandhi insisted on visiting Pakistan, where at the age of 79, he was felled by an assassin's bullet. It is not easy to make goodness, in this case saintliness, interesting, but Attenborough and Kingsley have achieved it.

There isn't a slow or dull moment in its three and a half hours running time. There are cameos by Ian Charleson as an English missionary who joins Gandhi's cause and Geraldine James as a British girl who does the same. In addition there are bits by Sir John Gielgud, John. Mills, Candice Bergen, Edward Fox, Trevor Howard, Martin Sheen, and South African playwright Athol Fugard who plays General Jan Smuts. The script by John Briley and Ravi Shankar's music help to make "Gandhi" one of the most distinguished films of this or any other year.

Moving then to Delhi, India, and gaining many more converts to his cause, Gandhi preached non-violence and non-cooperation, urging his fellow Indians to weave their own loin cloths rather than wear the silks and cottons that had to be purchased from England.

This affected the British economy and brought attention to his cause. Gandhi went to jail many times when he defied the British viceroys, but he always took it in good humor. Gradually, he united both the Hindu religion, which was his own, and the Moslems who had always been battling, and eventually he had all of them behind him. When Gandhi was arrested for sedition, even the judge who sentenced him hoped the British government would show clemency. Gandhi would go on dangerous hunger strikes when his awakened people were moved to make riots or do battle.

Such was the power of the Mahatma that his fellow Indians immediately stopped fighting for fear that Gandhi would die. In 1947, he lived to see the last viceroy, Lord Louis Mont-batten, grant India total independence, but this was Pyrrhic victory because the Moslems felt that only Hindus had achieved independence and they demanded their own separate state, Pakistan. But even then, trouble wasn't over. The Hindus and Moslems clashed bitterly and there were many deaths, so the frail old Gandhi went on one more hun plays a prisoner who is given 48 hours' respite from jail to help Nolte find two crazed cop killers who are after half a million dollars of stolen money Murphy has stashed away in his car. Murphy and the cop killers had been members of the same gang.

At first, Nolte and Murphy are too busy battling each other to seriously pursue the killers. But after the vicious men have killed another member of the gang and taken as hostage a girlfriend of one of them on orders that he obtain the suitcase full of money or else, Nolte and Murphy swing into action. There are wild chases all over San Francisco, its many hills, the Mission District and, ultimately, Chinatown. The action never stops. Neither does the humor.

Murphy is a riot throughout. Nolte, who has to play it straight, is as tough and talented as ever. Annette' O'Toole, a gifted actress, is wasted as Nolte's neglected girlfriend, and James Remar and Sonny Landham are chilling as the crazed cop killers. The screenplay is credited to Hill, Roger Spotiswoode, Larry Gross and-sSteven E. de Souza.

And James Horner's musical score is of considerable help. But it's Walter Hill's movie. The Paramount Pictures release contains gratuitous violence and raunchy dialog, making it a no-no for young children. But those in their late teens and early 20s will probably eat it all up because of those factors. In any case, "48 Hours" is fun to watch.

BERNARD DREW By BERNARD DREW Gannett News Service Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" is a monumental movie about the man who singlehan-dedly achieved independence for India from Britain, the one person in this century it is safe to call a saint. Full of spectacular crowd scenes, some of which employ thousands of extras in battle or riot, the film never loses sight of the intimacy of the warm man who inspired a nation end drew the respect of the world. Ben Kingsley miraculously plays the Mahatma, looking amazingly like him. He evokes all of the kindness, passionate zeal, stubborness, even humor the man must have had. After attending Cambridge University, Gandhi at first tried to look and dress exactly like a European when he first began to practice law in South Africa.

Still, he was humiliated, tossed off a train because he dared, as a black man, to sit first class in a train reserved for whites. He picked up his dignity and went his way. He decided then that he would live as a black man. And despite the fact that he was a Brahmin, born into the highest caste, he lived and dressed like an untouchable, the lowest of all. He began to call for Indian independence from Britain, starting first in South Africa when he asked for Indian representation in the congress which made laws for the country.

The film stars Nick Nolte as a tough San Francisco policeman who likes to work alone and is umpopular with his fellow cops. He is forced to team up with convict Eddie Murphy, the black star of television's "Saturday Night Live," who makes a terrific movie debut. Murphy eSffei sOcmsOns siidl owe!
