Here, the detectives' targets are Chinese slave merchants. The pursuit eventually involves Riggs' girlfriend (returnee Rene Russo) and a cop (Chris Rock) who's involved with Murtaugh's daughter. TV TALK MOVIES Best Bets "The Road Killers" (8 p.m., MAX). They're terrorized by the driver (Craig Sheffer) of a car that almost causes serious injury to one of them, setting up a showdown that endures over an entire highway. "Sour Grapes" (8 p.m, SHOW). When a loan results in the winning of a fortune, trouble develops between the lender and the recipient in this 1998 comedy.

Steven Weber and Craig Bierko Thirteenth play cousins whose close friendship is put to the test when one hits the jackpot in Atlantic City, thanks to two quarters borrowed from the other fellow. "Boy Meets Girl" (8 p.m., STARZ). A love poem cause complications throughout an Italian neighborhood in this romantic comedy. Joe Mantegna plays a lovestruck poet whose missive to the woman (Kate Nelligan) he ad-mires ends up in the hands of a cynical writer (Sean Astin). The latter man is thought to be the poem's actual author by an engaged waitress (Emily Hampshire) who proceeds to fall for him.

"My Family, Mi Familia" (8:30 p.m., ABC). This epic-scaled 1995 drama traces the experiences of several generations of a Mexican-American clan. Jimmy Struts, Edward James 01-mos and Esai Morales play members of the family, whose pursuit of the so-called "American dream" rarely wavers. "Deadly Pursuits" (9 p.m, NBC). Tori Spelling is more deceptive than she is as "Beverly Hills, 9021GV Donna in this North Carolina-set 1996 melodrama.

The woman is recruited to sway a college senior (Patrick Muldoon) from learning the truth about the slayings of his mother and sister. "Lethal Weapon 4" (9 p.m., HBO). Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are back as police partners Riggs and Murtaugh in director Richard Dormer's Gary acts fast, his mother may end up spending the rest of her life in prisoa "The Pretender" (8 p.m., NBC). Much as Robert De Niro played a heavily tattooed ex-con in "Cape Fear," Jar-od (Michael T. Weiss) takes on the same appearance in this repeat.

He poses as a parolee to find out wny a former convict was apparently robbing a home when he was killed. "Martial Law" (9 p.m., CBS). She becomes reacquainted with a former beau (Dan Gautnier), a Secret Service agent suspected by Sammo (Sammo Hung) of playing a key role in the illegal doings. "Walker, Texas Ranger" (10 p.m., CBS).

An alleged suicide seems suspicious to Walker (Chuck Norris), so he poses as a school principal to learn the facts in this repeat. The deceased man is the facility's former administrator, someone Walker knew well. As the ranger investigates the tragedy, he learns that drug dealers have gotten a stronghold in the school. "Beggars and Choosers" (10:30 p.m., SHOW). It might not seem like the most obvious programming for a network these days, but "The Ethel Merman Story" is given serious consideration by the executives in this new episode.

Many aspects of making the film are weighed, not the least of which is the desire of a drag queen to play the title role. Those in charge aren't sure the viewing audience is ready for that. "Chris Rock: Bigger Blacker" (11:15 p.m., HBO). The comedian cuts loose again as he performs for an audience at New York celebrated Apollo Theater. Those who know Rock's brand of humor are aware that he pulls no punches, especially when it comes to the language he uses, so the program is scheduled at this hour for good reasoa Among the topics he hits is the price of fame as he has experienced it.

MIKE HUGHES Gannett News Service For Dawn Schauman and Robin Bolt-man, life seems pleasant and aquatic. She's a Florida lifeguard, fit and attractive. He's a ship entertainer with a quiet sense of humor. Their coastal lives might seem sunny. Then there's the flip side shown on "Savage Seas" from 8 to 10 p.m., Sunday and Monday on WNET.

Boltman has been on two ships that sank. "I certainly pay more for insurance now," he says. Shauman had a near-fatal shark attack. "There was just blood all around," she says. These are the kinds of stories Hollywood loves.

Boltman has seen 'Titanic" twice; Schauman has seen "Jaws" tfour times. Their stories involve dangers that they used to ignore. "My husband, the day before, had been surfing," Schauman says. "There was a lot of bait fish in the water and a lot of sharks. "He had told me not to go in.

(But) he told me that every day." So Schauman went out for her usual swim. "I felt something slam into me and stop me dead," she says. "It spun me around. And when I came up, I was disoriented "I lifted my arm out of the water; it was just dripping with blood. And I felt this burning sensation on my leg." Five months pregnant, she was in the ocean with large gashes on her arm and leg.

Back at shore, the lifeguard didn't see her. "I thought 'Jaws, Shauman says. "I'm just sitting in a pool of blood. I was very nervous. "It took a few minutes to get my wits about me.

Thaf when I swam in with one arm and one leg "I was scrapping to get to the top (of the waves). It was very nerve-wracking. "I crawled out of the water, and then I felt a lot better." Such stories show up on other networks these days, often accompanied by thundering music and breathless prose. "Savage Seas" recounts the terrible aftermath of cyclones, ocean storms and mudslides. "You might say 'We've seen plenty of this stuff; if all over the says William Grant, the "Savage Seas" producer.

"(But) this is superior storytelling." And he's right Trie stories include: A South African surfer who needed 400 stitches after a shark attacked twice. World War II sailors who spent five days in the water, desperately chasing sharks away. Passengers whose Estonian ferry sank in the Baltic, causing many people to freeze to death. Aftermaths of cyclones, sea storms and California mudslides. This is a strong story with lots of visuals.

The producers who did "Savage Skies" and "The Savage Earth" knew the routine. "The production team has become very adept over the years at finding these sources of footage," Grant says. "The telling of the Oceanos story is pieced together from four or five different home videos." By now, Boltman is accustomed to disasters. "I was also onboard the Achille Lauro that caught fire off the coast of Somalia. So does anybody want to come down with me to the beach?" Not right now.

After "Savage Seas," we'll all want to spend vacation in the Midwest, far from any unpredictable ocean. New York Jets QB Vinny Tes-taverde competes in the "NFL Quarterback Challenge." "NFL Quarterback Chaflenge" (130 p.m. CBS). Many of pro football's top quarterbacks compete in this annual throwing competition taped in Orlando, Fla. Vinny Testaverde of the New York Jets, Randall Cunningham of the Minnesota Vikings and Jake Plummer of the Arizona Cardinals headline the field.

The QBs will be measured on long-distance throwing ability, throwing on the run and read and recognition skills. The challenge concludes Sunday at 5 p.m. "Backstreet Boys in Concert" (7 p.m., DISN). Taped at New York City's New Amsterdam Theatre, this new special features the popular, five-man group performing tunes before a very enthusiastic audience. Included is the quintef current hit, "1 Want It That Way." In addition to the concert segments, Nick, Howie, Kevin, A.J.

and Brian are seen hitting the streets of Manhattan and seeing the sights. "Early Edition" (8 p.m., CBS). When his mother (Tess Harper) entrusts all of her savings to a con artist (Michael Nouri), Gary (Kyle Chandler) tries to retrieve the money in this repeat. His mission is intensified when the day-early newspaper reveals that a woman resembling his mother was seen shooting the scam expert.
