The magnificent play will have the ability necessary for the occasion, all in good practice, as the rehersals show to a certainty. A WELL known traveling man who waits on an estimable young lady of this city got on a tear yesterday and while in a maudlin condition insisted in visiting bis lady, and the utmost efforts of friends were unavailing to prevent his doing so.

It is safe to infer that the young gentleman is less firmly established in the affections of his inamorato than before his lapse. It appears also that he narrowly escaped an opportunity to contribute to the city exchequer. "Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it giv- eth its color in the cup. At the last it biteth like a serpent and stingeth like an adder." More Trouble In Prospect. The trouble growing out of the transfer of the Glass Works property to the Chicago and Alton railroad is not yet settled.

The Glass Works Company are growing somewhat impatient at the delay experienced in securing a settlement of the difficulty by the road. Two months ago, it was said that the matter would be taken up and an amicable settlement obtained from the road. But the railroad company has done nothing yet. It is doing nothing. The city of Alton owes it to itself, as well as to the Glass Works Company, to see that this wretched piece of business) of gobbling property, which had been donated to the Glass Works, is met with a firm hand and if it is law that inust be appealed to then let it be appealed to at once.

So long as the Chicago and Alton road continues to be-cloud the title of Alton's great industry to the land given it by the city, just so long will our citizens hold, and hold rightfully, that that road is inimical to Alton and unfriendly in the severest form. If there is friendship for Mr. Smith, and for Alton, with the O. A. Compony, it is high time that some of it was being shown.
