It wos UCLA's third victory. Wl Wirephoto carries) as a replacement for Mickey Cureton, who suffered a twisted knee (not believed serious) in the.

first quarter, and played sparingly after that. Wingback George Farmer caught nine passes, one short of the UCLA one-game record, for 125 yards. Ballou was excellent on defense and Wes Grant, Geddes and Carver all had their moments. But then there were the fumbles, and the other miscues. Jones, a youngster who takes a fumble about like he would a death in the family, was cursing himself afterwards.

"I gave them more points than I scored," he said. "They're a pretty good team but if we played like that against teams in our own conference, we'd lose 'em all." The general impression was that UCLA had been about as flat as a week-old souffle for this one. The players spoke of "bad practices" during the last week, of less than keen "attitude," of a lack of emotion and inspiration. "We just weren't inspired like a defensive team has to be," Carver said. UCLA planned its defense to derail the A-Train, and did that fairly well, holding him to 86 yards on 26 carries 134 less than he gained against Oklahoma last week although he scored two touchdowns.

But the defense generally wasn't ready for the combined threat of Thompson, Johnson, Daw-kins and quarterback Neil Graff. The Bruin offense certainly didn't help, either, by making the defense spend so much time on the field. Prothro Not Surprised "I wasn't surprised by Wisconsin's offense," said Prothro, "but I was surprised we didn't get more play out of our defensive ends. They were screened out a lot by their big offensive tackles. They couldn't see over them." Both Prothro and Bruin offensive coach Jim Camp praised the Badger backs.

"I'd like to have one of those big, strong guys (Thompson or Dawkins)," said Camp. Coatta praised Dummit an excellent passer, and his receivers are but Coatta couldn't help adding: "I'll be very honest. thought we could beat them, both before and during the game. If we hadn't made mistakes we could have scored more. (Wisconsin lost a second-period TD on a penalty).

Maybe if we'd scored then we could have started them thinking. They hadn't been behind before this game this year." Badgers Won't Concede The Wisconsin players weren't conceding anything, either. "As we went off the field," said Bruin defensive tackle Floyd Reese, "I tried to shake Thompson's hand. He refused and hollered at me, 'How much did you pay the That made me mad." But by then, of course, it was over. And Prothro, if he was smiling thinly, still was smiling.

In victory, who frowns? Continued from First Page "They were a cocky bunch of guys, always mouthing st you," paid ophomore safctyman Ron Carver, who suffered a hip pointer after an interception that set up a second-quarter touchdown for UCLA. "They like to get you mad by yelling at you. And they took some cheap shots, too." For a while, it looked as if the skullduggery might be translated into one of the most startling upsets in college football in the last several seasons. Wisconsin held a 3-0 lead after one quarter on Roger Jaeger's field goal. UCLA missed a big break on the opening play of the game when Badger Greg (Grape Juice) John-Fon was tackled in his own end zone on the kiekoff by linebacker Mike Ballou.

But the Bruins were offside on the play and Johnson, reprieved, ran it back to his own 42 this time. Alan (A -Train) Thompson and Joe Daw-kins led a ground advance that set up Jaeger for a 24-yard field goal. Wisconsin got two more field goals from Jaeger In tie a school record set in 1SD9 in the second quarter, but UCLA, directed with what is becoming almost commonplace skill by quarterback Dummit erupted for three touchdowns. Bob Geddcs' recovery of a Daw-kins' fumble on the Wisconsin 33 set up the first. Carver, the youngster who makes things happen, ran a kick back 32 yards to ignite the drive for the second and set up ihe third with his 26-yard interception return.

"I came up behind my man (Stu Voigt) just as he tipped the pass," said Carver. ''I reacted just at the right time and got it." Jaeger Keeps Kicking Carver raced to the Badger 7 and after Jones ran 6 yards, Dummit sneaked across. The score was UCLA 21, Wisconsin 0 and it appeared as if the Badgers' surprising bid might be over. But Jaeger rame right back with his third field goal to make things interesting, 21-9, at half time. It perhaps should have been over midway through the third quarter, when Dummit lobbed a 30-yard pass over the middle to Jones for a 27-9 lead.

But Wisconsin, making up on offense for what it lacked on defense, wouldn't buckle. The Badgers were down, 31-23, and mounted two more, late-game drives. The more serious threat was halted when Geddes stopped Thompson short of a first down at the UCLA 3S with about eight minutes to play. Stars Aplenty There was no discounting the fact, however, that despite Wisconsin's general proficiency, UCLA did not play with nearly as much intensity and effectiveness as it did in its first two wins. There were stars.

Jones gained net yards, his second-best one-game total at UCLA. His best was 300 against Pittsburgh in 1067. Dummit completed 14 of 21 passes for 209 yards and still hasn't had one intercepted as a Bruin. Fullback Bob Manning ran well (55 yards on 14 UCLA STATISTICS Dodger Action! Baxter floated passes through the bright, brcezy afternoon for impressive gains and three touchdowns, but he was repeatedly smeared by Xcls or McGee for severe losses. Jacobs kicked two field goals and three conversions for Wyoming's Western Athletic Conference defending champions, and his long punts and kick-offs put Air Force in one hole after another. The lead changed hands four times before Wyoming pulled ahead 29-10 late in the third period.
