White, Light, Strong, "LaBelle" Flour. The Best, CHILD LABOR LAW. Annual Report of the State Factory Inspector. H.BIOTH 1 The Leading Jeweler, 119 Wfpt Third st. The following is a paragraph from the annual report of the State Factory Inspector under the child labor referring to the glass industry of the State.

It shows that while the em- ployes of the Illinois Glass Company have jncreatten more than 25 per cent, 1895, the number of children employed has fallen over 60 per cent. This is what the Inspector says of the Alton works, and It is highly oommenditory of the 1 Two of the six glass manufacturing companies in Illinois are the largest employes of children in the State in 1890, as is shown by an inspection made in December. In that month the Illinois Glass Company at Alton, employed 193 children, and the Strsa- tor Bottle and Glass Company at Streator 124 boys. The whole number of children in this trade at this inspection was 373, fifty-six being in the employ of four companies at East St, Louis, Belleville and Ottawa. The Illinois Glass Company especially illustrates the advantages of the child labor provisions.

The number of its employes has grown from 1,800 In 1805, to 2,600 in December, 1898; and the number of children has fallen from 603 to 183. The youngest children have been replaced by a mechanical improvement; and the work is now done by boys not conspicuously below the average size of working children, except Jn the case of a few boys who were already dwarfed before the law took effect. This dwarf- Ing of children has not been found to' the same extent in any other branch of industry and the enforcement of the law seems to have checked it in the glass works. nits and We fltee UKEc West Third Street, Uangerous Hunting. Messrs.

Eugene and Ralph Webb had a rather unpleasant experience Sunday night, caused by the rapidly rising waters of Che Missouri river. They had been hunting wild geese on the Missouri, and pitched their tent for the night not far from the water. In a short while they noticed that the water was coming up to them, and they sat np all night for fear of being surrounded by the flood. In the morning the river was such a torrent, and the waves so boisterous, that it was dangerous to venture on it in a but they finally succeeded in getting home yesterday afternoon. When they left the Missouri the place where their tent had been was covered by fifteen feet of water.

The 25 and so cent bogles lor sale by Mauslj and 8. The waters of the Mississippi still continue to encroach on the lowlands, though not at tho rapid rate of Sunday and Monday.

The rise last night was eighteen inches, and there has been a small advance today, The total rise so far has been about seventeen feet, one of the greatest advances in the river that has ever taken place in so short a period of time. All the lowlands are flooded, and the inhabitants of the shanties and boat houses along the river have had to flee to higher ground for safety. Several of the boat houses along the sand bar were sunk, and the owners lose all their contents. These poor people are left without homes and last night many of them appeared at the police station begging for shelter. They were given quarters in the old postoffloe for night.

It is thought that the height of the flood has been reached, unless more wet weather ensues, which is not probable from present indications. The river presents a wild scene with its broadexpanse of waters and white- capped waves, while along the shore is wreckage of all descriptions, with the Eagle Packet wharf-boat located many feet from the shore. If the river should block in this condition the wharf- boat would bo in a dangerous situation, as it would be liable to be. carried down stream by heavy ice.
