MISSED FIELD GOALS-Wake Forest, Hoyle 30. Army, Rambusch 35. 1 By BARRIE DAWSON Staff Writer WEST POINT, N.Y. It was the kind of ground game those who attend Army football games at Michie Stadium have become accustomed to the past two years. A run for five yards here.

A gain of 10 yards there. Plenty of ball control and plenty of touchdowns. However, it wasn't the Army wishbone that was gobbling up chunks of turf play after play Saturday afternoon. It was the Wake Forest pro-option attack the same offense that passed for 429 yards against North Carolina State the week before. The result was a 49-14 Army loss to the visiting Demon Deacons.

It was a game where the Cadets' offense was stuck in neutral and the defense in reverse. The loss ended 1-2 Army's 13-game home winning streak and 3-1 Wake Forest's 49 points were the most given up by a Jim Young-coached Army team. "Obviously, we made a lot of mistakes," said the surprisingly calm Young, whose team was hit with 12 penalties for 110 yards and lost three of four fumbles. "We're not poised, we're not doing a good job of coaching, and we're playing some pretty decent teams. We're banged up a little, but nevertheless we're supposed to play over those things." Where Army is banged up the most is in its offensive line.

Three of five starters guards Bill Schleiden (hamstring), Jack Frey (sprained ankle) and tackle Ed Shultz (shoulder sprain) did not open the game. Frey was the only one of the three who played. When asked whether the absence of the three linemen was the reason why the Army wishbone was ineffective, quarterback Tory Crawford said, "That has a large part to do with they (Wake Forest) came off blocks and shot gaps. We've just got to get healthy. "We all thought we'd have a better showing than we did today we knew we had to improve and during practice we did.

We knew this game was a challenge we were supposed to overcome." The Cadets didn't. On their first possession, they marched 43 yards but didn't score because place-kicker Harold "Bit" Rambusch missed a 35-yard field goal attempt. Wake Forest then ran the ball 13 times in 15 plays, marched 80 yards during a drive that consumed 7:04, and took a 7-0 lead when fullback Chip Rives ran through the middle for a three-yard touchdown with 3:41 left in the first quarter. Knowing that Wake Forest had passed successfully against North Carolina State, Army went to a nickel defense on the Deacon's second offensive play and used it liberally throughout. By game's end, Rives had accumulated 122 yards Nevertheless, the game remained close through out the first half.

Craw ford's 23-yard touchdown burst with 2:12 left in the half tied the score, 7-7, but Wake Forest an swered with a 67-yard touchdown march that consumed 1:51 and concluded with quarterback Mike Elkins' four-yard scoring toss to Rives :21 before the half. The Wake Forest drive was aided by a pass-inter ference call against Army that Young vehemently protested. The Deacons pulled away, 21-7, on their second possession of the third quarter when they forced a Crawford fumble on the Army 23. On its first play, Wake Forest's McGill turned a draw play into a 23-yard touchdown. By the end of the quarter, the Deacons led, 35-7.

"We were a little flat against Northwestern," said Army linebacker Dave Scheyer, when asked why his team hadn't rebounded from last week's loss. "Today, we made too many mistakes. To be effective, we have to have 11 guys going and we haven't had it. There were too many missed assignments." 3 i yyp" Pitt routs West Virginia EAST 4 MIDWEST Photo by Robort Sckvrino 100-yard Wake Forest rusher Darryl McGill (44) is grabbed by Army's Tom Mathers (76) Irish hp Purdue, 41-9 SOUTH BEND, Ind. The Notre Dame defense stalled Purdue freshman quarterback Jeff George, who experimented with 10 receivers and accumulated 295 yards total offense to Notre Dame's 478 yards. Holtz had promised Johnson more playing time to perk up Notre Dame's running game after Johnson's impressive rushing touchdown last week in a losing effort at Michigan State.
