The principal office will be at Alton, and tho capital stock will be $800,000.

The Incorporation will ox- piro fifty years from March 1, 1800. Tho incorporators, who also form the first Board of Directors, aro Alvah Mansur, George 8. Drake, Honry H. King and George M. Wright, all of St.

Louis, and P. M. Homer, of East St. Louis. This is another new line that proposes to cross the Mississippi on the Alton bridge.

If half the roads come to Alton that are now projected on paper, this city will bo a railroad center of very groat importance. We are all waiting vtiry anxiously for work on the bridge to begin. Assurances come from a variety of sources that both the bridge, and railroad to an assured fact. That the 0. B.

Q. and tho M. K. and T. are both behind the scheme, and that in due time the work will begin.

Prospects certainly are good, and this new belt line from Belleville would indicate that some of the eastern and southern trunk lines are looking in this direction for a new St. Louis and southern connection. Tho Vandalia people are said to be eyeing the Alton bridge and western connection with a good deal of curiosity, and have partly admitted that they are considering the matter of crossing the river on the Alton bridge. This can scarcely be all smoke. "Where there is so much-smoke there must be some Bre," is an old and trite saying, and if true, there must be considerable fire about our proposed railroad facilities.

26 6 Will it do Edwardsville any Uoodl THE Edwardsville Republican rarely misses an opportunity of sneering at Alton. This is its latest effort: The Alton committee still lack $2,000 of having sufficient means to secure an Opera House. The Odd Fel- ows gave $15,000 and the citizens were to raise another like sum. Over a month in raising $13,000. That's enterprise for you.

Edwardsville $22,000 in four days. If the Republican thinks this will make it friends in the balance of the county, then it will no doubt go right along in its present vindictive course. Howell. 23 dwlw THE funeral of little Lucy, daugl ter of Dr. and Mrs. W. A.

Haskell, took place this morning. Owing to nature of the disease which proved fatal in this case no services were held at the house, but the gathering at the cemetery was a notably large one in spite of the inclement weather. The services at the grave were conducted by Rev. Dr. Wolff, and were of simple and touching character, opening with the words of the great Teacher, "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven" and followed by other selections Itting the sorrowful occasion.

At the close of the service the mound was covered with beautiful flowers, rich perfume and fruitful in suggestions of the lovely human flower which In its brief life on earth had exhaled only fragrance and sweetness. Little Lucy was a child unusual promise, gifted with rare intelle- jence and childish charms added io a winning and loving disposition. She was the idol of the now desolate home and a favorite with her young associates. Her bright and happy childhood promised to blossom into a womanhood of wide usefulness, a blessing to her parents and friends. But the fond tiopes which were centered in her ypung life are withered and fled, and ihere remains to the afflicted parents only the consolation that in her earth- home she tasted none but the sweetness and joy of existence, and now forerer sheltered from the storms and sorrows which those who reach mature years never escape.

Yet none of these things can still Jie longing of the parental heart for the living presence of the loved ones who have passed beyond tho shadows manywho gathered around that open grave this morning, with hearts full of iympathy and sorrow, there came thoughts of how of- "the beloved physician" had brought comfort and help Into stricken households, and of how many were the homes whose family (circles wore unbroken to-day because of his skill and watch -oaro. To such it seemed a cruel mockery that when tho clouds gathered over hii own home those who were HO great- debtors to him in time of troub'e were powerless to return availing aid.
