12. people of the parish of staid Roseville Methodist Church were astounded today at the news that their most ardent church worker had been arrested as a confidence woman with a record of a half- century of swindling and prison life. The charge against Mrs. Amelia Carr, gentle-voiced bespectacled wife of the chairman of the church trustees, was defrauding another church woman of $4700. Essex County Prosecutor William A.

Wachenfeld said a check of fingerprints by the FBI unveiled a career of crime starting in 1891 during which Mrs. Carr, now 66, had swindled numerous victims of more than $1,000,000. The husband, J. Clarence Carr, 70, was heartbroken. He couldn't believe It.

"She has been a queen to me. I know nothing about any unfortunate affairs of her past," he said. The church pastor, the Rev. Edson R. Leach, could only say: "It simply amazes me, because for the past five years I have watched her doing charitable work and acting the role of a good churchwoman." When the aghast police let her sit with two police matrons who acted the role of prisoners they were more surprised because, Prosecutor Wachenfeld related, she quickly spotted the two for officers and burst forth with the words, strange indeed for a churchwoman: "Do you think I'm dumb enough to blow my top off to them?" Wachenfeld said the FBI dossier disclosed she had used eight aliases, Ray J.
