PAGE EIGHT Civic League at Brighton Will Meet Wednesday Mrs. Stella Amass of St. Paul, to Speak BRIGHTON, Doc. 29 (Special). The Civic League will meet at the home of Mrs.

Russell Brown Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Stella Amass 'of St. Paul, head of thr stale department of psychiatric education there, will speak. Mrs.

Amass, a former Brighton girl, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Horine, has been making a holiday visit, here. The entertaining committee is headed by Mrs.

Cora Amerine, chairman, and includes Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Emma Reader, Mrs. Charles Yancey, Mrs. John L.

Ash, Mrs. O. C. Isenberg and Mrs. Paul L.

Warner. Members of St. John's Evangelical Women's Guild will hold its annual Sunshine Sister Christinas party this evnning in the basement of the church. The weekly community prayer meeting will be held Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock at the Alvin Oertel home on Brown street Brighton Church Service will be celebrated at 7 o'clock New Year's Day at St. Alphonsus Catholic church and at 9 o'clock at St.

John's Catholic church at Medora, the Rev. Father William F. Klasner officiating. Farewell Dinner surprise potluck dinner was given by members of the Presbyterian Church Sunday for James Gillespie, a student, at Blackburn College, Carlinville, who has been supplying the pulpit here for the past year. The new pastor, the Rev.

A pageant was presented by the junior class under the direction of Ethel Jones, entitled, "A Light on the Hill." The characters were the following: Marian Kuehnel, Ruth Boker, Freddie Schneider, Bernice Kruse, Gloria Neubauer, Jerome Kamp, Elmer Orban, Keith Wilton, Jimmie Isenberg and Bobby Boker. Remarks were made by Alvin Stamme, teacher of the Young class. The offering was taken for the benefit of the Orphan's home at Hoyelton. At St. Paul's Methodist church a pageant was given by the Sunday School under the direction of Miss Emma Jones.

The following took part: the Rov. Harry Nease, Mrs. Harry Nease, David Lively, Virgil Jones, William Burk, Jean Allen, Billie Burk, Minnie Burk, May Hunt, Clcon Jones, William Yost, Alan Jones, Wondel Towse, Earl Lee and Wesley Swan. A reading was given by Miss Mary McAfee, with Miss Lucy Reader as pianist. Returns from Trip in South F.

Nelson returned Wednesday from a toui through the Southern States, calling on Capt. and Mrs. J. A. Murphy of Macoii, and going far south as Florida.

This is an annual event and the honored guests were P. L. Warner, of Brighton, Mrs. Stanley Otten of Modesto and Miss lone Challacombe of Medora, all of their birthdays falling on Dec. 26.

An oyster supper was served. Gifts were presented to the honored trio. Present were: Mr. and Mrs. P.

to Meet Neighbors will meet Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Jane Shields. There will be a gift exchange and officers for the coming year will be elected. Newiyweds Charivaricd and Mrs. Jack Peek, newlyweds, were charivaried Friday evening by eight co-workers on his shift at the Alton Box- board they having followed the groom home from work that evening.

The group brought their music with them and furnished entertainment playing and singing. They presented the couple with a Shirley Montague, Marian Kuehnel. Mrs. Hermes presented all officers wilh a token of appreciation, after which the regular meeting was held. After the meeting a gift exchange was held.

and Mrs. Clarence Emmons and family of Brighton were guests Thursday of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carroll. Mr.

and Mrs. L. C. Dougherty visited at Rockbridge Friday afternoon with her aunt, Mrs. Cora Ruyle.

Mrs. Ruyle suffered a broken hip this fall and since returning home from the hospital has suffered a stroke. Mr. and Mrs. Hervia Sullivan re turned home Friday night from a visit at Moline and Chicago.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bruns and family were guests of her brother, Laverne Parrish, at Alton Friday evening. Mrs. William Searles visited Thursday night and Friday with her daughter, Mrs.

Stanley Otten at Modesto. Mr. and Mrs. George Sanders were supper guests Thursday evening of her parents in Carlinville Mrs. Minnie Brandow of Hammond, arrived Thursday morning for a two weeks' visit with her sister, Mrs.
