C8 THE JOURNAL-NEWS, FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1987 Fox shows highlight weekend but the real joy is watching the hesitant gestures of nice people in love. Producers Ruth Bennett and Susan Seeger choreograph this mating dance beautifully. In "Surrender," our couple is married. He works at an office; she's temporarily at home with the kids. The men get the best lines, but the women also have nice comedy touches.

Both shows make us laugh and smile and want to return next week. Their efforts are still clumsy, but a different direction. These people are new to this momma-and-daddy business. There's no Cosby here, no Ward Cleaver; there are simply two young people trying hard to fit new roles in life, Yes, "Surrender" has the usual elements, the funny neighbors and funny parents and swinging co-workers. Husband-wife producers Stuart Wol-pert and Deidre Fay of have By Mike Hughes Gannett News Service They live on different shows and on different networks.

But as we meet these couples this weekend, we can't help thinking they're really the same. They're simply at different points in life's timespan. In "Duet" (9 p.m. EST Sunday on the new Fox network), we see people starting to date each other. We watch the fresh clumsiness of early love.

And in "Sweet Surrender" (8:30 p.m. Saturday on NBC), we arrive a bit later. They're married, with a toddler and a 5-year-old; they're still fresh, still clumsy, still in love. In both cases, the man is slim and affable, played by a comedy veteran. "Sweet Surrender" has Mark Blum, fresh from a hot streak in 'Crocodile' Dundee," "Desperately Seeking Susan" and "Blind Date." "Duet" has Matthew Laurance, who did a year of "Saturday Night Live" and seems familiar because his twin, Mitchell, is a regular on "Not Neccesarily the News." And in both cases, the woman is calmer, played by a sweet-faced newcomer.

"Sweet Surrender" has Dana Delany; "Duet" has Mary Page Keller. The men prone to well-meaning lurches at added some cheap, sitcom-style gags. But the core remains that youthful thrust at parenting. Through the first two episodes, at least, that keeps the show interesting and involv -PC ing. Also of note this weekend: life get the best lines, but the women also have nice comedy touches.

Both shows make us laugh and smile and want to return next week. In "Duet," Laurance plays a struggling writer of detective novels, his mind adrift in romantic visions. Then he spots Keller, the personification of those daydreams. She's a modestly successful caterer, he's a dreamer who barely gets by. But they're good people, leaning toward love.

In the first two episodes which run back-to-back Sunday they spend more time apart than together. She's with her flaky sister (Jody Thelen); he's with his crass buddy (Chris Lem-mon, Jack's son). The side characters are for the quick laughs, "Daniel and the Towers" (8 p.m. Saturday on PBS) is a relatively mild "Wonderworks" outing. But it's shot amid the real-life Watts Towers, an incredible folk-art creation that one man spent decades crafting from junk.

The setting alone makes this worth watching. And "Christine" (9 p.m. Saturday on CBS) is the best of the Stephen King scare films, beauti fully directed by John Carpenter.
